Barrow 2-4 Wolverhampton Wanderers
January 10th 1959
FA Cup 3rd Round
Attendance 16340
In January of 1959 cup fever gripped Furness with the visit of the then Division one champions Wolverhampton Wanderers for an FA Cup third round tie.
Barrow had progressed to the third round after wins away at Notts County and home against Hartlepool United and now 16340 crammed into Holker Street in anticipation of a cup upset against the league champions. The game had been in doubt after heavy snow had fallen on Furness and it had taken an army of volunteers to clear the snow from the pitch so the game could go ahead.
The Wolves side contained England Captain Billy Wright but it was Barrow who had the first real chance when Robertson shot narrowly wide from a loose ball just outside the penalty area.
Wolves started to press Barrow and took the lead in the 13th minute but just before half-time Barrow’s Roberston headed in an equaliser to make it all square at the break.
Seven minutes into the second half Wolves regained the lead but Barrow’s Keen scored on 72 minutes to level the scores and shock the Champions.
Any thoughts of a major cup upset were silenced only minutes later when Wolves regained the lead and then added a fourth two minutes from time.
Barrow had put up an excellent fight against the league champions who went on to retain the First Division title while Barrow finished next to bottom of Division 4
