Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 Barrow

League Cup 3rd Round

A month after defeating Crystal Palace in the second round Barrow travelled to Hillsborough to take on first division Sheffield Wednesday.
Barrow started the game at a high tempo and did the early pressing but suffered a blow when Wednesday’s Scottish international Jim McCalliog knocked the ball in from a Richie knockdown on seven minutes.
Barrow almost equalised straight away when David Storf forced the Wednesday keeper into a full length save. Minutes later there was further disappointment for Barrow when the referee disallowed a deflected equaliser from Roy McCarthy.
Wednesday took full advantage of the let-off and increased their lead with a 25 yard drive from Fantham.
In the second half Barrow started to put Wednesday under some pressure and the Wednesday keeper prevented Barrow from pulling a goal back when he saved a deflected Storf shot on the goal-line.
Billy Mcadams deservedly pulled a goal back for Barrow in the 69th minute when he was put through by Mulholland and he rounded the keeper and stabbed the ball home for a great goal.
As Barrow pressed for an equaliser Wednesday sealed the game four minutes from time when Fantham gave Barrow’s keeper Duffin no chance to seal the game 3-1
Barrow bowed out of the competition but could hold their heads high after a spirited performance against first division opposition on their own ground.
