After wins over Carlisle in the first round and Runcorn in the second, Barrow were rewarded with a daunting trip to the capital to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the third round.

Although Barrow lost the game by five goals to nil it was only in the latter stages of the game that Chelsea  exploited the gulf between the first division and the third division north, scoring three times in the last 21 minutes.

It was Barrow who were unlucky not to open the scoring within the opening minute, while Chelsea took their chances  to lead 2-0 at half time, with goals from Armstrong on 14 minutes and Campbell just before the break.

Barrow fought hard in the opening stage of the second half and the Chelsea left-back Bathgate almost headed into his own net and it was only a reflex save from the Chelsea keeper that prevented Barrow from pulling a goal back.
The third goal came in the 69th minute with he final two being added in the 75th & 80th. Barrow’s goalkeeper Alex Roxburgh also produced two outstanding saves as well as saving a second half Chelsea penalty.

The attendance, 44,336, still stands as the highest crowd that Barrow have played in front of.
