Barrow 1-0 Crystal Palace
September 13th 1967
League Cup 2nd Round
Attendance 7908

After a first round victory over Southport, Barrow hosted the visit of second division Crystal Palace to Holker Street in the second round of the Football League Cup.

Palace came to Barrow as one of the front runners in the second division and in their ranks was Johnny Byrne a £45,000

On the night Barrow raised their game and matched their higher league opponents with Barrow’s Brian Arrowsmith giving Palaces Johnny Bryne little room for manoeuvre.

Barrow keeper Fred Else was only really tested once when he brilliantly tipped a close range Terry Long shot over the bar.

Barrow thought they had taken the lead when the visiting goalkeeper  slipped as he went to claim a lob from Barrow’s Storf only for him to recover and claim the ball just before it crossed the line.

Barrow deservedly if not a little fortunately took the league in the 57th minute when Mulholland miscued his shot sending the visiting keeper in the wrong direction and to the delight of the Barrow supporters the ball found the back of the net.
Palace hit back strongly in the search for an equaliser but the Barrow defence held firm for a deserved victory.

The reward for defeating Crystal Palace was a trip to Hillsborough to meet First Division Sheffield Wednesday in the third round.
