Barrow 2-3 Bristol Rovers
November 11th 2006
FA Cup 1st Round
Attendance 2939

On an atrocious afternoon with a gale force wind and torrential rain, Barrow were looking to claim their first Football League giant-killing, after previous failures against Rotherham United, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, Leyton Orient, Oldham Athletic and Shrewsbury Town.

The pundits must have been expecting an upset as Match of the Day had sent their TV Cameras to record the game for extended highlights on that evening’s show, which for one Barrow player this was to have serious consequences.
Barrow started the first half playing into the wind and keeper Jamie Spear was finding the conditions hard as his goalkicks were blowing back into his own penalty area !

Rovers expectedly had the best chances in the opening 20 minutes with Rigg heading over and Campbell shooting straight at spear. Shortly after Rigg had to be replaced after looking dazed and holding his face.

On 35  minutes Rovers took the lead when Walker shot from the edge of the box and despite Speare’s dive the ball nestled in the far corner of the net.

At half time Barrow had held Rovers to only a single goal advantage and now, with the wind in their favour, the fans hoped for better things.
In the opening moments, Andy Bond hit a 40 yard free-kick which the Rovers keeper did well to turn around the post for a corner. Moments later, Barrow midfielder Steve Ridley should have equalised but somehow managed to drag his shot wide.

Rovers responded with this let-off by punishing Barrow with two goals in five minutes which seemed to seal the win with only 22 minutes left to play. But just two minutes later Barrow pulled a goal back when Tom Pope headed in from a Steve Ridley corner on 69 minutes. The crowd urged Barrow on and on 77 minutes, Barrow Substitute Nick Rogan shot home after a goal mouth scramble from another Steve Ridley corner.

Barrow now had Rovers under pressure and they had their keeper Phillips to thank as he pulled off two outstanding saves to deny Barrow the equaliser, first from Nick Rogan when he pulled off a brilliant reflex save from a point blank shot and then diving full length to turn the ball around the post from a deflected James Cotterill drive. Barrow had produced a memorable fight back but couldn’t find an equaliser.

Later that evening when the BBC were editing the film of the game for Match of the Day they found the reason why Rovers Sean Rigg had to leave the field. Barrow defender James Cotterill was captured punching him on the chin. Rigg was taken to  hospital and was found to have a double fracture of the jaw which resulted in the insertion of two metal plates into his jaw.
Barrow immediately suspended cotterill and on 11 January 2007 he was jailed for four months after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm but was soon released from prison on 14 February 2007
