I was employed in the Radio and Television retail trade for 31 years, first as an apprentice, then a service engineer, and then in managerial positions in engineering and retailing. After that 17 years (after retraining), in Secondary Education, in a Design & Technology faculty.
I was licensed in October 1987 as a "Diocesan Reader" (after a 3 years course of study in, theology, liturgical and pastoral subjects) by the Bishop of Sherwood at Southwell Minster in Nottinghamshire, to serve at Worksop Priory, St.Gile's Carburton and St.Mary The Virgin Clumber Park. As of December 2006 I became "Reader Emeritus"
Readers are lay people in the Church of England, from all walks of life, who are called by God, theologically trained and licensed by the Church to preach, teach, lead worship and assist in pastoral, evangelistic and liturgical work.
The office of Reader is the only lay ministry in the Church of England which is voluntary, nationally accredited, Episcopally licensed and governed by canon. There are now over 10,000 Readers, with men and women represented almost equally.

Patron Saint of Radio Amateurs
Maximilian Kolbe was born in 1894 in Zdunska Wola which is near Lodz in Poland .He joined the Franciscans at the age of 6 and was ordained a priest in Rome in 1919 at the age of 25. A struggle with tuberculosis forced him to return home While in Poland , he published a Christian periodical which was established in a newly established friary in Niepokalanow , Poland (this is thought to be the reason for His amateur call sign, SP3RN - SP for Poland and RN for Radio Niepokalanow). In 1936, Maximilian relocated to Niepokalanow to take up the post of friar superior. When word came that Nazi Germany was moving toward Poland , Maximilian ordered the friars to flee, yet he remained to use the friary as a refuge for some 4500 Poles and Jews. He was captured by the Nazis in 1941 and was sent to the concentration camp in Auschwitz . Shortly after his arrival, he negotiated the starvation sentence of a prisoner by offering his life instead. Without food or water, Maximilian survived for 14 days; impatient, his captors ended his life by lethal injection. He was Canonized in 1982, and His memory is celebrated every Year on August 14.

My wife Ann (nee Fullard)
Was part of the dance troupe and chorus who appeared at "The Kings Theatre" Hammersmith London in the 1951/52 pantomime," Robinson Crusoe", the comedian Max Wall was the star, Ann was dancing from the age of 3 and continued until she was 15 appearing in many local shows as well as London.
Below is the the link to an organisation which supports retired artistes from the stage and acting profession, contributions are greatly welcomed by this worthy cause.
Ann who is now retired was employed in the civil service for 31 years, and as recognition of this service was a guest (along with me) at Her Majesty the Queens' garden party at Buckingham Palace in July 1997,in attendance were also, The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, and Princess Ann.
Ann was one of the early founder members of "The Samaritans" in Worksop, I joined slightly later on and became a case leader, only retiring to allow me more time to study for the churches ministry. We both served around16 years.
Ann is now an active member of the Mothers Union and a Sunday school teacher.
We both do a moderate amount of cycling as a keep fit activity!
We have kept parrots all our married life, namely Macaws,Amazons and African Greys, at present we only have one "grey" called Portland.

We have one daughter who holds a senior post in the civil service in Manchester; and one granddaughter who is a graduate (BA Hons.) of Manchester Metropolitan University and works in private medical insurance.
