The Trades Windows

 

The two large windows on either side of the pulpit on the church's south wall were presented to the church by the Nine Incorporated Trades and the Three United Trades in 1892.

 

The easternmost window's main panel depicts Ruth gathering in the harvest with Boaz and other workers.  At the top is the heraldic device of the Nine Incorporated Trades.  The left panel has the heraldic devices of the (from top) Baker, Shoemaker and Glover.  The right panel has those of the Tailor, Bonnetmaker and Flesher.

 

The westernmost window's main panel  depicts Jesus, with His parents, at work in the carpenter's shop.  At the top is the heraldic device of the Three United Trades.  The left panel has the heraldic devices of the (from top) Hammerman, Weaver and Dyer.  The right panel has those of the Three United Trades - Mason, Wright and Slater.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Lesslie Window - west gable.

 

Inscription reads -

Above :  "The Child Grew and Waxed Strong in Spirit"

Below: "To the Glory and Honour of God and to the sweet and loving memory of my father and mother

Alexander Lesslie, Born 1822.  Died 1905.

and

Elizabeth Kermath, Born 1830.  Died 1927.

Gifted by Lily Inglis Lesslie.  1929"

 

 

The Carmichael Window - west, front, below Gallery.

 

Inscription reads -

"Suffer Little children that come unto Me and forbid them not for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.

 

In memory of the Carmichael Family"

 

 

 

Weaver Window , north wall.

 

 

The Skea window, north wall.

 

Gifted by Mrs. Jane Skea in memory of her son, Nicol, who died in 1974 aged 25.

 

Inscription reads -

Above: "He is not here: He is risen".

Below: "This is my beloved son".

 

The window depicts Christ's baptism while the upper section portrays the scene at the empty tomb

 

 

The Simpson Window - north wall.

 

Inscription reads -

"In loving memory of Joseph William and Janet Annan Simpson"

 

The window represents The Good Shepherd.

 

 

The Findlay Memorial Window

 

Inscription reads -

"".

 

The window depicts references to Ecclesiastes, chapters 9 - 12, to 'living under the sun'.

 

 

The Lesslie Window - east gable.

 

Inscription reads -

Above :  "Fear not, for I bring you good tidings of great joy."

Below:  as west window, above.

 

 

The Walker window - east, front, below Gallery.

 

Inscription reads -

"Erected by his family in memory of Thomas Walker, Notary Public, Dundee, the first Scottish Lawyer who appealed from the Supreme Court in Edinburgh to the House of Lords".

 

The window depicts the Good Shepherd finding the lost sheep.

 

 

The Nicholson window - north wall, west gallery.

 

Inscription reads -

Left: "Ascend, entreat Me not".  Right: "Unto my Father, To Leave Thee".

Below: "To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of my wife, Jean W. Nicholson, died 24th January 1971".

 

The window depicts the Ascension.

 

 

The Memorial window - east gallery gable.

 

Gifted by the Nine Incorporated and Three United Trades as a memorial to the Rev. T R S Campbell BD.

 

The window depicts St Andrew's Church, the Old Trades Hall and the Howff, the original meeting place of the Nine Trades.

 

 

The Neave window, west gallery.

 

Inscription reads -

Above: "God is Love".

Below: "Presented by Hope W. Chalmers Neave in memory of her husband, Baillie David Neave.  Born 11th April 1818.  Died 2nd July, 1881.  For many years a Worshipper and Office Bearer of this Church.

 

The window depicts St John, the Evangelist, with Scroll, with the symbol of the eagle above.

 

 

 

The Davidson window, south wall, west gallery.

 

Inscription reads -

"Installed by Mary Jane Davidson to the Glory of god and in memory of her mother, Georgina Ramsay Davidson and her sister, Anne Hendry Davidson".

 

The window depicts Andrew introducing Simon Peter to Jesus, who calls him to be a fisher of men.

 

 

The Smith window, south west gallery.

 

Inscription reads -

Above: "ye have done it unto thee".

Below: "To the Glory of god the gift of Mrs. Jean Smith, wife of Robert A. Smith, 1967".

 

The window depicts the Parable of Christian Kindness.  The BB badge appears at the top with the motto "Quit ye like me, be strong".

 

 

The Word window - north wall, Gallery.

 

A memorial to the Rev. T R S Campbell BD, minister at St Andrew's from 1950 - 1985, gifted by the Congregation.

 

Inscription reads -

"To the Glory of God and in Grateful Memory of Rev. T R S Campbell, MA, BD, Minister of this church from 1950 - 1985".

 

 

The Stalker window - east wall, east gallery.

 

Inscription reads -

Above: "They saw the young Child with Mary His Mother".

Below: "To the Glory of God and in memory of James S. Gibb, and his wife Jane".

 

The window depicts the Nativity.

 

 

The Davidson window - south wall, east gallery.

 

Inscription reads -

Above: "If I be lifted up I will draw all men unto thee".

Below: "To the Glory of God and in memory of Florence Mary, wife of James Johnston Davidson, Taymouth, Carnoustie".

 

The window depicts the Crucifixion, with a portayal of the Last Supper in  the upper part.

 

 

The Scott window - east gallery

 

Inscription reads -

"Follow me and I will make you fishers of men".

 

The window depicts St. Andrew, the Apostle, handling his net by the Sea of Galilee.
