"Rookie Rumble II"
| Back by popular demand for
tonight's journey into Bororclix was the Rookie Rumble,
allowing only Rookie level figures to be played, although
this time I did allow feats and bystanders to be used
too. As is usually the case for Boroclix League events we
had a solid turnout with fifteen players joining in
tonight. One more newcomer to the tournament scene, so
welcome Kieran and I hope you had fun. Cheesemeister extradinaire Dale de Andrade had another fromage-tastic offering tonight, though not on a par with the side-kicked Defending KC Green Lantern crew that I thankfully missed on the last Mega Day. Tonight he had taken a 100 point Sinestro Construct and added Nanobots teaming this up with Batman (as you would), Ragman, Valkyrie and Bullseye ... nice theme running there Dale! : ) Oh well, on with the event reporting I suppose! There were fourteen other players playing here as well as Cheese Man though so I better get on with the report. Stephen Hunt went with yet another themed team tonight, showing the way to true glory and honour for certain other players I wont mention the names of (you know who you are). His "Excalibur Strike!" consisted of Captain Britain, Sprite, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey (posing as her daughter) Mystique (allegedly being Amanda Sefton), Meggan and Gambit (playing the part of Pete Wisdon). Ok then, it was sort of themed. Ste managed to go unbeated in the swiss rounds as he took out Matthew Cannings, Simon Fox and Jonathan McNamara in three very one-sided games. A total of 1060 points and a place in the final were in the bag. David Hansell's "Stealthed Flame" saw Black Panther (Nanobots), Sunfire, War Machine, Wildfire and Scarlet Witch join together for this weeks unholy alliance. It all worked out nicely for the first game as he took down Ryan very convincingly, but the second round match against Dale was somewhat more challenging and one that David lost out on. Dave regained his winning ways in the last match as he beat Simon Fox by a very handsome margin. As Meatloaf might say "Don't be sad ... coz two out of three ain't bad"! Jonathan McNamara scored well tonight as his "WOW! What A Team" appeared to have been aptly named. Superman, Avalanch, Scarlet Witch and her twin sister and Dr. Mid-Nite were the protagonists for his point scoring excursion tonight. In his first match he scored a well deserved points victory over Paul Spencelayh. He continued his strong showing as he doubled his win tally and more than doubled his points as he beat off the challenge of Martin Teece in round two, but this success saw him come up against the Huntmeister in the third round and he lost Superman just as he was having to leave ... so close to a first final spot. Alec Barrett also started well as he beat Simon Swinbank and Kieran Nunn respectively. "This Is My Team" cunningly used Titanium Man, Starfire (Vendetta), Bullseye, Ghost (Sidekick), Firebrand, Spoiler, Johnny Alpha and a Jarvis pog. The massed ranks were not quite enough to achieve the ellusive 3 - 0 scoreline though as Dale took the third game from his this reaching the final in his stead. Peter Davies used one of my favourite clix tonight as his "Black Death" was lead by the Mandarin. Joining the Yellow Peril was Black Queen, Scarlet Witch, Viper, Typhoid Mary, AIM Agent and some Hand Ninja to complete a nice looking line up. They may have looked nice, but they didn't play too well as he lost the first match to Kieran (that'll teach you to build a team for him) and then lost again to Parry. He didn't lose his last game so avoided the dreaded 0 -3 and last place, but only by virtue of a bye. I am sure you'll do better next time round! Speaking of Kieran, he did ok for his first ever event. He beat Peter in his opener with the "Nunns Attack" (sounds like something from Horrorclix) team of Superman, Green Lantern, Vixen and Robin without losing a figure. The solid start helped a lot as he lost his lat two games to Alec and then Parry, but thanks to his big early win he was clear of the bottom spot. Parry's team name for tonight was the rather odd "Bye". His didn't get one all night though as his first game saw him suffer badly at the hands of Wensley (sorry I mean Dale). The loss didn't prove a major setback to Aurora, Captain Atom, Mach I and Crimson Dynamo though as they came back well to win round two against Peter and three against Kieran. Over 1000 points too, that puts him into good league placings. Paul Spencelayh had one of the better team names with his "Lords of Hypnotic Death" and also used Mandarin, this time with Ghost, Spider-Man, Green Goblin (WHAT! TOGETHER!!!) and Scarlet Witch. Unfortunately though, the only hypnotic death the generated most of the night was their own as he lost all three games, only managed to KO 137 points all night and finished dead last. I fear the Mandarin may not be seen again for some time after his showings tonight. Paul Brown 's "Hidden Rooks" team was made up from Ravager, Shadowlas, Madelena, Spider-Man, Robin, War Machine and a collection of feats. In one of the tightest games seen for a while Paul just lost out in his first match and saw Martin Teece scrape to victory. His second game was even tighter as only one KO proved to be the deciding factor, but this time he was on the winning end of a close game against Matthew Cannings. Paul's close matches didn't last all night though as Simon Fox would by a much more comfortable margin when they faced off in the third swiss round. A mid table 683 points was Paul's final placing. Ryan Callahan's "Buttwuppers" didn't do a great deal of buttwupping unfortunately, buttwhupped yes, buttwhupping no. Marina, Speedy, Jinx, Human Torch, Cyclops, Captain America, Doctor Octopus and Scarab must have had some internal conflicts as they didn't seem to want to work together as a team at all. The outcome of Ryan's first match was a hideous whitewash at the hands of Hansell's Nanobotting Black Panther and Co. Ouch! The second round saw Ryan get a bye thanks to his earlier hammering so he picked up some points and a win. Back to losing ways for round three though as Martin Teece took the spoils and most of the points. Not bottom, but not far off for Ryan. Simon Fox had his "United By A Random Heroclixer" team well drilled and Black Adam, Darkseid, Speedy, Destiny and a Paramedic were ready to rumble. Unfortunately for Simon, the odd numbers worked against him and his team sheet didn't get a pairing giving him an unwanted first round bye. Someone had to get it I suppose. What's worse than getting a first round bye then? Getting a first round bye and then having to play the National Champion in the second round of course! How unlucky is that? So one game played and one game lost after losing to Mr. Hunt, but the bye now helped acheive a 1 - 1 balance. Things improved considerably for the last match of the three for Simon as he too Paul Brown's minons down a peg or two to finish with a very respectable 2 - 1 and over 100 points, not too shabby at all after that first round by and second round nightmare draw. You actually scored more points than Hunt with his 3 - 0 if you look at the table. Martin Teece's team had a name I couldnt quite read the start of, all I got was " ... and I Hope To Win It All". It was made uyp of Black Knight, Man Bat, Jewel, Green Lantern, Storm, Bullseye (Heightened Reflexes) and Electro (Vendetta) as he was once again looking to score bonus League Points.A close game as described earlier against Paul Brown had a 330 points win go infavour of Martin so he was off to a decent start. It all went a bit Pete Tong in round two though as Jonathan McNamara secured a whitewash against Martin's assembled rookie force. It ended on a higher not for Martin as he acheieved a second win, this time against Ryan under the conditions of Madness. Mid table obsurity for Martin after the final count. Matthew Cannings imaginatively titled "Boob" saw the coming together of Spider-Man, Black Widow, Jean Grey, Doc Samson, Hercules and Aurora. An unlucky first round pull saw him facing Ste Hunt for his first game and he pushed it right to the wire, but lost out on points in a very closely scored game. He couldn't improve to perform better against Paul Brown and Paul condemned him to a second defeat without losing a figure. Matthew finally scored a win in his last match against the fun loving Mandarin squad of Paul Spencelayh. Simon Swinbank was in again as he seems to like the League events in particular. His "Ride of the Valykries" would have won the award for best team name ... had there been one tonight. Not surprisingly Simon's team had multiple Valkyrie, just the two of them and one had Indomitable on her. Assisting the lovely ladies were Spider-Man (very popular choice tonight and this one had Pounce), Monsieur Mallah, Dr. Strange and the fashion victim herself Ravager. Simon lost his first match at the hands of Alec's menace and then turndaround to score a win for round two against Paul Spencelah. Despite his Proximity Mines he was on the losing side again for round three when David Hansell gave him a nasty whitewash. Not nice. Saving the best (or should that be the worst) till last, I now come to Dale de Andrade's record. Dale first saw off Parry Cooke and secured a mighty impressive 678 points. How did he achieve that in a 300 point game I hear you ask? Well his "Fear Sinestro" team name sort of gives it away. Sinestro Construct (with Nanonobots) helped me to coin Dale's new name ... Wensley and added to it was Batman (Vault), Ragman, Valkyrie and Bullsey (Lucky Break). Capturing big point opponents and using double attacks was Dale's path to lactose-lined glory. In his second match he only managed a meagre 581 points against David and them a pitful 510 against Alec. VERY POOR ... and thus on to the final. |

What can I say? The cheese was grated and heavilly beaten by the nice themed team. Nothing unusual there - it was after all Ste Hunt playing the themed (ish) team. At this rate though it will be 100 point restricted events soon. Some of the events entrants have looked more like dairy produce than Heroclix teams and its getting worse rather than better. : ( I SHALL FREEZE THE CHEEZE! Congratulations to Ste for bringing down Dale in the fromagey final and to Jonathan McNamara for securing the Fellowship Award. See thee all later as the say on Yorkshire TV! |
