"In the Hands of the Gods" or "Return to the Dairy Farm"

Taking the opportunity to ensure the local players don't rest on their laurels and get stuck in a rut using the same power combinations every week, I had decided to do away with two of the favourites for tonight's contest. "In the Hands of the Gods" was supposed to test the players tactical skill a little more as I had made the powers of Outwit and Probability Control unusable for the evening, however with the further development of the cheese brigade my plan somewhat back-fired. It was a relatively quiet number numerically speaking as we had just nine players duking it out for the glory, honour and prize support associated with an event win.

Jonathan McNamara had placed most of his eggs in a single basket as his "Speedster, YEAH!" team saw the Veteran Superman Dr. Mid-Nite combo we have all come to love. His team did the business in match one as he beat Peter Davies at a canter losing Dr. Mid-Nite but Big Blue owning the board. Only 34 points of KO's though was a little odd. Close game to say they least as 202 turned out to be a winning score. A very similar story unfolded in Jonathan's second match against Stephen Hunt. Dr. Mid-Nite was again disposed of to leave Superman fighting on alone and this time Jonathan scored 40 points of KO's to win with 208 points. He must have been taking lessons in how to have close games before this weeks clix fix. Sadly for Jonathan, it all went a bit horribly wrong in round three as Superman finally met his match in the form of Simon Fox. Like a ropey Eurovision Song Contest entry poor Jonathan got nil points as he was condemned to a rare whitewash defeat. Oh well, you can't win them all.

Alec Barrett's "Him & Her" saw Blackbolt (Protected) team up with Echo (say it again now) for 199 points of force. The first round wasn't the most productive or successful for the duo though as Paul Brown scored a whitewash leaving Alec with zip points and a second round bye. On the plus side they bye saw Alec get a guaranteed win and some points on the board. After the bye things improved for Alec as he managed to cane Peter Davies and finish with a respectable looking 2 - 1 and 463 points (respectable as long as you didn't did into the details that is).

Stephen Hunt had gone with probably the three best known Marvel characters in creation as his team for tonight as Hulk, Spider-Man and Wolverine teamed up under the title of "Foxy Made Me Play Them" (is there a story behind this we ask ourselves?). The marvelous Marvel trio's first test was against the young newcome Kieran Nunn and unfortunately despite Ste's best efforts to help and assist, Kieran just didn't have the guile to make much of an impact on our resident chump (sorry, I mean champ). Ste went straight to a winning 1 - 0 record and a handsome 296 points, but would it last. NO is the short and simple answer to that one. In a rather surprising result, Jonathan McNamara pulled of an inspired victory against the Huntmeister to leave him looking at 1 - 1 and 480 points rather than an expected 2 - 0. Hunt was back to winning ways next round though as Paul Brown faced the backlash of his earlier reversal and a perfect 400 score ensued ... perfect for Hunt that is, I doubt very much it was what Paul was hoping or planning for. A whitewash is rarely welcomed with open arms.

Simon Fox gained a large amount of Kudos from the Judge tonight as he lined up a "Sinister Syndicate" of Rhino, Shocker, Vulture and Hobgoblin. The Syndicate rule, even when the lose they rule. For trhose that hadn't guessed, I really like the Sinister Syndicate. Speaking of losing but still ruling, the first round draw wasn't too kind to Simon and he played Wensley (Dale) in his first game. To be fair to Wensley (Dale) he didn't actually have the cheesiest team build tonight, but after the stunts he has pulled lately the name sticks I am afraid. Simon managed to grab only a measilly 5 points out of this match up, obviously condemning him to an early defeat. Thankfully, the 5 points he scored saved him from taking a second round bye and he instead got to play Kieran Nunn and redeemed himself with a whitewash victory and a maximum possible 400 points, some turnaround there. Round three saw Simon come up against Jonathan McNamara, fresh from beating Ste Hunt. Simon was in no mood to surrender though and ended Jonathan's winning streak in fine style scoring 392 unanswered points. A 2 - 1 and 797 points for Simon was prety impressive after the very poor start he got.

Kieran Nunn was back for more Heroclix action tonight and this time his nameless team was Speedy, Katana and Huntress (all veterans) and a rookie Black Lightning. Kieran got his event under way in the toughest possible way as he played out a first round match against Stephen Hunt. Not surprisingly he tasted defeat, but Ste did give him some tips and tricks and helped him to a 104 points of KOs before the defeat was complete. Second up for Kieran was Simon Fox and this went even worse than the earlier match had for him. This time round Kieran didn't get to score a single point as Simon went a big hardcore point hunter and weighed in with a whitewash. Nasty man! Kieran managed to achieve a win in hios last game, alas it was only by virtue of snagging a bye due to having the worst record going into round three. Still 200 points is 200 points I suppose and its very early days for Kieran's Heroclix adventures.

Peter Davies did fair particularly well in his matches either, in fact he did worse than Kieran as he ddin't have a bye to fall back on. His "3 Amegos" squad consisted of Johnny Storm, Invisible Girl and Black Widow with the Alternate Fantastic Four Team Ability Feat. Peter's first game was against Jonathan "How Much For That" McNamara who has really come on with his playing ability in recent weeks. It wasn't a totally washout though as Peter did manage to collect 190 points in the game as it was actually a very close contest. It was downhill from there though for Peter as his next opponent was the cheesetastic David Hansell and his abomination of a 200 point dairy farm. There was no shame at all in losing to David's lords of lactose even if it was a whitewash and if anyone should be shamed its Hansell's heretics. Having hit a slippery slope, Peter wasn't able to turn it round in his third game as Alec Barrett overcame him and once again he wasn't able to add to his points tally. Ho hum, he played the game in great spirit as ever though.

David "Lord of Cheese for the Night" Hansell went for an interesting two figure combo (as in NOT at all interesting ... get with the sarcasm) when he chose to run with Flash (Nanobots and Armor Piercing YAWN!) and Dr. Mid-Nite. The lowest score David picked up all night was in round one as he was the unlucky recipient of the random bye ... lucky for everyone else though as this meant only two players had the misfortune to face his team in the swiss rounds. Poor Peter Davies was the unlucky guy to get drawn against David for the second round mismatch and it was a huge shock (not) to see Dave win and Peter get zero points. Everyone was incredibly shocked (sarcasm again) when he won his third match against Dale. Dale got rather frustrated as he couldn't do a lot against his opponent, hopefully this will show him how other people felt against the Side-kicked KC GL. Don't keep cheesing up boys ... its no fun and your not making any friends. Obscene points total and a LE Figure 1, making friends and having fun 0.

Paul Brown seemed to take the friendly approach to play tonight as his "Avenged Boost" weighed in with just Quasar and Spider-Man and a Thunderbolts and Nanobots. In his first face off it seemed to be a very effective combination as with the addition of an Ordinary Day BFC he was able to take down Alec Barrett's squad in a whitewash and stack up an impressive 399 points. This was the only highlight of Paul's night though as it all went horribly wrong from this point forward. Round two saw Paul come up against Dale's Doomsday machine and the outcome wasn't pretty as Paul didn't increase his score at all. Round three for Paul was against Ste Hunt and a second sucessive whitewash saw him complete his event with the same score he had after round one ... yes he pulled a Teece.

So that just leaves Dale's performance in the swiss rounds to account for. "It's Like Stopping Doomsday" was a one man army sonsisting of ... Doomsday oh yes and nanobots, Lucky Break, Unstopable and Vendetta. Dale's first round was an impressive victory over Simon Fox's Sinister Syndicate enabling him to score 452 points thanks to his lingering Vendetta. Next up for Dale came Paul Brown and Doomsday once more triumphed without giving away any points to his opponent and gaining extra freebies thanks to his endless Vendetta against anyone he fought. 986 points after two rounds? Surely thats not possible in a 200 point event? It all came to a horribly sticky end when Doomsday (quite slow really isn't he) met KC Flash (not slow at all) and it wasn't a pretty sight to behold. Lets just say David won and Dale didn't have a lot of fun.

David builds up his cheese intake with a cheese toasty ... not that he needed any more cheese with the team he was playing tonight mind you!

Wensley uses Doomsday to good effect in round two as he destroys Paul Brown's good early start. Damn you cheese boys

"You can't hurt me ... my wings are like a shield of steel". Oh, maybe you can then. Batfink isn't yet a Heroclix unfortunately

The new campaign motif! Hopefully certainly Coulby Newham based players will take notice. If not the events will end up as 100 points restricted format!

So the final was a very unhappy Dale against a very cheesy David ... or at least it should have been. Dale didn't want to play David again because his team was no fun to play against and whilst on most occassions I would have made a play or DQ decision I decided to use this one to my advantage. I allowed the final not play and discussed with Dale that the way he was currently feeling is the way a lot of other players have felt at times with teams that he has played and that always playing to win with hardcore figures and feats really saps the fun out of the game for may Heroclixers. Maybe the 'twins of evil' will take heed and tone it down a little now? It's ok to play hard, but I really don't want to have to keep adding extra restriction due to one or two players using abusive combinations every week. Please Freeze the Cheese! Simon Fox collected a well deserved Fellowship LE for his fromage free friendly frolicking! Nice theme team and he played it well too - showing others the way of the future hopefully.

On an unrelated note ... Craig wasn't playing Heroclix tonight (he saw one or two of the teams and decided against it). Instead he played Talisman with Chris Larkman and lost. Do you see what you are doing NOW????? THIS is what you are driving people to!!! ; )

Craig shows that not only can Chris beat him at Heroclix, he can do him at Talisman as well! What will it be next week? Warhammer 40K?
