"Team Tussle ...Trials and Tribulations"

Thankfully after the hideous night of awkward questions last week I had gone with a nice simple all same Team Ability theme this week (no unaffiliated characters this time round though). This should be sooooo much easier on the poor Judge. We started the event with 14 players eventually after a late arrival and a couple of 'ums and arrs' so it was another very good turnout (when is it not lately?). We had a new youngster in our midsts tonight too as Ryan Callaghan played in his first Heroclix Approved Play Event. Thanks to the stash of LEs sent by Anup from Wizkids I had a few extra prizes to give out again tonight too.

Craig Woolnough had what was easilly his worst event performance EVER tonight as he finished bottom on a disasterous 0 - 3 and managed only to scrape together 51 points all from his last game ... against a complete newcomer. Craig's first match was against Paul Spencelayh and his exceptionally appropriately titled "Ex-Men" lost badly picking up zero points, whitewash number one. Craig's second match up, against Simon Swinbank went no better and the Internal Strife made little difference as a second whitewash was inflicted on a lacklustre Woolnough team. The taunts began that Craig would soon be able to equal Liam's zero point haul and Craig feared the worst as his dice continued to roll appaulingly. His third and last match up was against newcomer Ryan and although he couldn't stem the tide enough to avoid a third sucessive defeat and finish rock bottom, he did at least manage to register his first points of the evening as he got to KO a Spider-Man. Not the best night's work ever, why oh why did you think the Infinity Challenge Unique Cyclops worth worthy of inclusion in your team? Banshee and Psylocke may even have performed better on their own!

Jonathan McNamara was trying his arm with a Teen Titan team today, aptly named "Teen Titans". Green Lantern, Terra and Changeling started very strongly for Jonathan as he started this event with a good win against new kid on the block Ryan Callaghan. The good foundation didn't help Jonathan to build a successful offense though as in his second match he was soundly thrashed (to within an inch of his life) by the rampaging Paul Spencelayh and alas he suffered a whitewash ... a lot of those about tonight again. Jonathan played Peter Davies in his third game and although he managed to avoid a second whitewash, again it didn't go too well as he lost once more and only collected 24 points. Still, thanks to Craig's dismal showing a single win was enough to avoid the bottom slot.

Peter Davies "Dead End's" team saw Techno, Jessica Jones, Shaman and Quicksilver come together with a bit of Alpha Flight action. The addition of a Power Dampening Field in the first match against Matthew Cannings didn't give much assistance as poor Peter went down to yet another whitewash. Better things were to come for Peter tonight though as he recovered well in round two to beat Ryan convincingly and then he followed that with another strong performance and high scoring win over Jonathan in round three. A final scorecard of 2 - 1 and 738 points gave Peter fifth place and possibly his best finish to date. Well done Peter!

Martin Teece had apparently discoved that Sabretooth had a twin as he joined two Veterans with an experienced Destiny and Pyro to make "200 Brother It Was Quick Swift". The combination was pretty effective in his first match and whilst using the ever popular Madness BFC he managed to make short work of Paul Brown to take a first win. In a topsy turvey rollercoaster of an event for MArtin he lost his second round battle against Alec but then went on to win again in his third match where he beat Matthew and thus finished 2 - 1 with a respectable 703 points.

Paul Spencelayh went for a deadly duo of X-Men to develop his "XX" team as Quicksilver joined forces with a Nanobotsing Forge. A very strong first round match against Craig (or Loser as he was more commonly known tonight ... sorry Craig) was followed by an equally impressive hammering of Jonathan McNamara to take Paul within sniffing range of another final. Unfortunately, Paul's reward for such an impressive display in his first two rounds was a third round match against local nemesis of all clix players the Huntmeister! All good things must come to an end they say and Paul's winning strict was brought to an abrupt finish as Hunt beat him comfortably allowing Paul only 44 points to add to his tally from smiting Gambit. Surely smiting Gambit should be worthy of a win in itself? Still a great display from Paul earned him 829 points overall and third place in the standings.

James Cook, competing again tonight after enjoying his return last week had my favourite team of the evening as an unfortunate error had seen him leave most of his clix at home. The few he had brought allowed him to field three varieties of Captain America (take that Iron Man!) all with the additional benefit of the Alpha Flight card ... hmmmm Canadian Captain America Clones, you have to laugh and the name of this wierd monstrocity? "The Alpha Wanderers". A slightly late arrival saw James take a first round bye rather than play a match. As Paul Crosby then volunteered to join in at Round two so that is was even numbers these two were paired up having both been given first round byes. James didn't fair very well as the Nanobotsing opponent proved most irritating. Another Paul was awaiting James for his last game, this time Paul Brown. Once again no points went James' way as the Captain America triplets failed to deliver and Jimmy was defeated. He did get the fellowship award though so it's not all bad news!

Paul Brown's team sheet was something to behold as, at the third time of asking and after much crossing out he went with a Superman Robot and Krypto to make up his "Unknown 'RE'-Vengers" 200 point team. A first round match against Martin Teece yielded little in the way of joy for Paul as, despite taking out one of the Sabretooth twins, a heavy defeat was the outcome of this scrap. Meeting Dale in round two didn't really help Paul's cause either and he lost again, picking up even fewer points as he only managed to see off Spoiler this time round. Finally at the third time of asking the Superman wannabes made good on their theoretical promise as paul managed to get a win against James Cook in his last match of the evening. Nice to see the Superman robot though. Not many of those about as I think Paul and Ste D are the only local players that have picked any up so far.

Matthew Cannings, now a regular weekly Heroclixer, showed his selfish side tonight with his "Me Me Me" team made up of Beast, Meltdown, Magick and Cyclops for that familar X-Men flavour. The combination seemed to be effective as a first round win was the result against Peter Davies (Peter's only loss tonight in point of fact). The great start proved something of a nuisance for Matthew though as it saw him face Ste Hunt in his second game. As might have been predicted the challenge of the Huntmeister was far too powerful for the inexperienced Matthew to handle and in the umpteenth whitewash of the night the Hunt was victorious. Having sampled the bitter taste of defeat Matthew went on to play Martin Teece in his final game of the tournament. The experience of Martin proved the decicive factor as another defeat followed for Matthew but this time one in which he was outbattled rather than destroyed. A tough set of matches left Matthew on 1 - 2 at the end of the night.

Simon Swinbank had gone one better than Martin as he used a pair of twins tonight, teaming up a veteran and an experienced Wolverine with similarly levelled Psylockes Simon created his "The Psylock and Wolverine Show". If these guys were in a ratings war they may have been cancelled after the first series (assuming they had made it past the pilot) as an unlucky first round pairing saw them come up against Ste Hunt in round one. A whitewash follwed as the Huntmeister seemed in the mood for blood and no mercy tonight and that meant Simon went into round two with nil points. The benefit of this of course was an easier second round tie and whilst on paper a game against Craig may not be that easy, tonight Craig's team 'sucked' and in a big reversal of fortune Simon went from being the weakest link to the strongest as he whitewashed Craig's sad X-Men line-up. Joining the Martin Teece rollercoaster, Simon saw his third whitewash in round three (though on had at least gone in his favour) as he came up against a tough opponet in Dale. Two zero scores made a final total of 394 look pretty good really.

Newest player in town, Ryan Callaghan braved the competition of Approved Play for the first time tonight and was rewarded with an LE figure for his efforts (from the extras). A very tough start for his "Fishy Squad" (I dare not ask!) containing three incarnations of Spider-Man (was tonight the night for clones or what?) one of which was using Armor Piercing came as he played another youngster, but one with a little more experience, Jonathon McNamara. Another whitewash later Ryan was still to pick up his first points, let alone his first win. Things didn't improve massively in round two as Peter Davies was the opponent but Ryan did manage to collect his first ever poinst thanks to taking out a Quicksilver. The third round was a real boon for Ryan as he came up against the very off form Craig who was struggling to hit a barn door form point blank range. Ryan's first win was upon him and he condemned Craig to a humiliating 0 - 3 scorecard and rock bottom place. Still the only way is up from there eh Craig?

Dale de Andrade's team sheet I believe named his team "Gotham Knights", but it did look rather like Gas Them Knights to me. Batman, Spoiler, Robin and a Swingline endowed Azrael made up the team that had the Bat Sign tonight (very surprised there were not more). A first round defeat at the hands of Alec wasn't really the start Dale was looking for as it ended his challenge to reach the final before it had even begun. He did recover from this setback to take a win in both his other matches and a big win at that as he zonked Paul Brown in round two and Simon Swinbank in his final game. A strong finish, but too little too late as no slip ups are allowed when so many players are involved.

Paul Crosby joined the fray late in order to make the numbers even and avoid the annoying bye scenarios for rounds two and three, so thanks for that Paul. After a first round bye then Paul's "He's Too Cool For Team Mates" saw a solo joe Superman (the Veteran form Collateral Damage) power up with Nanobots and Protected to take on the opposition. James Cook probably wasn't so thankful to see him join in and make up the numbers as their second round game ended up being a little one sided. The Captain America Triplets managed to hurt the Big Blue a few times, but each time he flew off to eat some trash with his exciting nanobot ability much to the annoyance of James clones cronies. In the end Supes had won and James had no points. Alec was the round three opponent and this was definately a sterner challenge for Supes. He stood his ground and nanobtted a few times around the board but ultimately the best clone team of the night (officially) saw him off and prevented Paul from achieveing another 3 - 0.

Craig starts the night the way he means to go on - losing badly!

Only four figures on the board for this game. I am guessing the turns were pretty quick if nothing else. Alas Captain America Inc. didn't have the Marvellous ability needed to see of the challenge of the Blue Bombshell from the DC Universe (wassok!)

The final starts to unfold as Magdelena seems to get everywhere!

Tonight's battle hardened veterans working their winding path to the final with perfect 3 - 0 records were Alec Barrett and Stephen Hunt. Alec's "Followers of Magdelana" consited of Sister Magdelena LE, Two Veteran Magdelana, one experienced and a rookie ... nice and efficient clone team there then. First victim of the Blades Bragade was Dale, soon followed by Martin and then Paul Crosby as Alec cut and chopped his way to the final.

Mr. Hunt used a little more panash and Perplex to get to face Alec as his "X-Men's Patented Anti-Stealth Device" saw the joining of Wolverine, Blink, Gambit and Shadowcat (methinks he was expecting more Batman teams). Hunt's opponents and cannonfodder were first Simon Swinbank and then poor young Matthew Cannings who was ruthlessly destroyed. The only player to take any points of the avenging master in the swiss rounds tonight was Paul Spencelayh and he only got 44 points for seeing of the Cajun Chicken.

The final saw Alec's many bladed wonders overcome the valiant efforts of the X-Men thanks to some nifty swordsmanship (swordswomanship?) though Blink survived far longer than expected and got two KOs to almost rain on his parade. Mr. Hunt was runner up for the second week running ... I can't help but think his name is on the trophey again some time very, very soon.

Fellwoship went to James Cook for taking some whacks in true sporting manner and only crying "Wazzok" every fifteen seconds or so at Paul Crosby, a big improvement! Thanks to everyone for playing, hope you all enjoyed it and see you all soon for the nest instalment of Heroclix action. Don't forget Horrorclix is out next week so we will soon be having some "Wicked Fun" with that.
