The Bishop of Rochester came to visit and the local paper article gave the impression that the Operator pictured was the Station Manager.

Denis Reeks is still waiting for his upgrading money for that event.

1985(ish) the collier MV Dallington turning on its anchor to berth on Long Reach Jetty fouled a French Cannon from the Napoleonic War period which became entangled with the anchor and was raised out of the water as the anchor was weighed.

Where there's brass, there's muck

After the Dallington berthed the cannon corroded and covered with marine life was removed from the vessel and submerged in brine solution on site for about three years to leach out the salt and prevent disintegration. It was loaned to Fort Amherst Lines and Trust in Chatham for restoration and display at the request of a member of the Trust where it remains.

During this war French prisoners were held on captured hulks anchored in the River Medway some using captured cannon whose trunion mountings had been removed as anchorage. The chain and wire strops used for this were in good condition despite their time in salt water.
