The Black Mountains, where the seasons continuously transform the landscape, provide Caroline with an endless source of inspiration and most of her work is based on what she discovers when walking in the hills near her home. Downey Barn Gallery also displays Caroline's rustic wire sculptures. Her husband, Peter, has examples of his Blacksmith work in and around the gallery in the form of decorative, contemporary ironwork.

DOWNEY BARN GALLERY is situated by the crooked Church of Cwmyoy in the Llanthony Valley. The unusual and distinctive work of artist Caroline Downey is displayed at her hillside traditional barn gallery. Starry nights and shadowy moonlit scenes feature in one of the many styles of work produced by Caroline. She describes herself as an "enthusiastic artist" using vivid colours and texture to complete her work. On display at Downey Barn Gallery is Caroline's original "sculptured board painting" entitled "Millennium at the crooked Church of Cwmyoy" which was the winning painting in the Daler-Rowney Worldwide Golden Jubilee Competition.
The "sculptured board painting" technique has been created by Caroline. It was first developed in 1997 when her husband presented her with a panel that he had grooved and scuffed using carpentry tools. By linking the scribbled lines together with texture and colour Caroline aims to produce a distorted quirkiness within the completed "sculptured board painting".

Caroline looks forward to welcoming you to her charming hillside gallery & gardens.
