A word from the editor
This issue of Bahá'í
News is dedicated to the Huqúqu'lláh, Heroism and History. These
themes-have been chosen because of the urgency that the followers
of Bahá'u'lláh focus their thoughts and actions towards
those things which will lead to the much longed for world peace.
As we move into 160 BE. we witness
the outbreak of yet another conflict between opposing nations. As
citizens of our country or of the world, as watchers and listeners
of news broadcasts, Bahá'ís - both individually and
collectively - are canvassed to join the ranks of one side or the
other, or to stand up in general opposition to war.
At such times, it is vital for the
believers to follow the dictates of the Covenant, to turn to the
Writings and infallible guidance of God's Cause and apply in our
lives the answers found there. And what is called for is a kind
of heroism unlike any other.
The Bahá'í position
is perhaps an unpopular one. The Guardian commands us:
" We should - every one of us - remain aloof, in heart and
in mind, in words and in deeds, from these political affairs and
disputes of the Nations and of Governments. We should keep ourselves
away from such thoughts."
How very difficult it can be to "remain
aloof, in heart and in mind" when newspapers, television,
radio and friends demand :our involvement, press for us to stand
up, and ask "what do you think?"
Our reply will take an act of heroism.
And, like all heroism,, it will demand of us sacrifice of self.
