A word from the editor

This issue of Bahá'í News is dedicated to the Huqúqu'lláh, Heroism and History. These themes-have been chosen because of the urgency that the followers of Bahá'u'lláh focus their thoughts and actions towards those things which will lead to the much longed for world peace.

As we move into 160 BE. we witness the outbreak of yet another conflict between opposing nations. As citizens of our country or of the world, as watchers and listeners of news broadcasts, Bahá'ís - both individually and collectively - are canvassed to join the ranks of one side or the other, or to stand up in general opposition to war.

At such times, it is vital for the believers to follow the dictates of the Covenant, to turn to the Writings and infallible guidance of God's Cause and apply in our lives the answers found there. And what is called for is a kind of heroism unlike any other.

The Bahá'í position is perhaps an unpopular one. The Guardian commands us:
" We should - every one of us - remain aloof, in heart and in mind, in words and in deeds, from these political affairs and disputes of the Nations and of Governments. We should keep ourselves away from such thoughts."

How very difficult it can be to "remain aloof, in heart and in mind" when newspapers, television, radio and friends demand :our involvement, press for us to stand up, and ask "what do you think?"

Our reply will take an act of heroism. And, like all heroism,, it will demand of us sacrifice of self.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CANCELLED
NATIONAL CONVENTION DATES REMAIN UNCHANGED

4 April 2003

To all National Spiritual Assemblies

Dear Bahá'í Friends,

We have been following closely developments in the world as they affect the Middle East, in the hope that the passage of events would make it possible for the International Bahá'í Convention to be held as planned. However, for the sake of all concerned we can wait no longer. To our feel compelled to cancel the holding of the International Convention, and we write to so inform you.

This is the first time we have had to implement the provision of the Constitution of the Universal House of Justice that states: "If at the time of an election the Universal House of Justice shall consider that it is impracticable or unwise to hold

the International Convention it shall determine how the election shall take place." The ballots of the members of all National Spiritual Assemblies are arriving daily, and we are arranging for the nineteen delegates chosen to be tellers to come to the Holy Land to count the votes on the Ninth Day of Ridván. Should circumstances make it impossible for these friends to come, we shall adopt another means for the discharge of this task.

National Conventions should continue to be held in May, around the Anniversary of the Declaration of the Báb, as currently planned. We are confident that the friends, surrounded by the confirmations of Bahá'u'lláh, will pursue the aim of the Five Year Plan with undimmed zeal.

With loving Bahá'í greetings,

[signed: The Universal House of Justice]
