Speed camera SatNav device POI icons

Example icons

These icons are an alternative set of map and alert icons designed to be used with speed camera POI database from PocketGPSWorld which hosts a collection of safety camera locations in various formats. These icons are now available on the PocketGPSWorld website with permission. Updates may be available on both sites.

These icons put most emphasis on the speed limit and are colour coded for quick recognition. They also have some "shading" to produce a less blocky image.

UPDATE With version 8.3, transparency now works but a box with a pointer is shown. A new set of icons with red around the outside of the gatso icons will now show just the circular icon (with the pointer). The redlight icon has also been amended to show with the pointer. Cropped screenshots are shown below.

22x22 pixel icons are the standard size of icons used as POIs. New versions of the consolidated by type and single file sets have also been produced along similar lines to the speed zoned icons though keeping similar symbols and colours to the defaults.

As newer TomToms are capable of using 24x24 pixel icons, this size has also been created. On the speed zoned sets, conversions to the other speed limit is also shown as an option. Garmin devices appear also capable of using 24x24 icons. Due to how they use the database, icons from the consolidated and single sets are provided though these can be used by others as well.

It has been found by members of the PocketGPSWorld site that the 22x22 icons work on any device that the default icons worked on. A few devices can use the slightly bigger 24x24 icons. Only TomTom devices running software v7 and above can use the large icons. The site also has a compatibility chart which is being produced showing which devices can use which size icons.

Garmin wants square icons.

It has been found that Garmin devices do not like non-square icons unlike TomTom devices. This has been noticed using the redlight icon. Though instructions on how to edit them have been given, it is easier for the end user to be able to download it. The new icons are at the bottom of the main list here. Once the main 22x22 or 24x24 icon set is downloaded, please download this extra file which just contains a square redlight icon in the same size. You can then carry on the installation.

Large alert icons

Example large icons

When TomTom added a new feature which enables users to share their content with others through the Home application, buried in the documentation on the site was a quick paragraph noting how you can make a separate, large icon for the alert icon in the top corner. Previously, this was made by enlarging the standard icon.

TomTom notes in the documentation that Navcore 7 and later is required for the large icons to work. Older version should just ignore the extra files. One unusual thing found so far is that pure red does not become transparent when using the large icons contrary to TomTom's notes. UPDATE: This appears to be fixed in version 8.3.

There are now large (44x44) sets that match all the standard sets. When using large icons on TomTom devices, a standard set is also required to show on the map itself and in list options. You can pick and choose which set to use for a particular function.

If using the "dual-speed" icons, it is possible to use single-speed standard icons on the map (not showing the converted speed) and dual-speed large ones for the alerts. Any pairing of same type icons will work however.

UPDATE - Icons reduced on screen in TomTom version 8.3

On the release of Navcore 8.3, the alert icon is reduced from 44x44 to 32x32 on screen (the bmp file stays the same). This made reading the icon at a glance much harder. A new set of icons have been produced to get around this. The redlight icon is now also square as the rectangular one goes over the edges of the new box TomTom thought people would like. :( Screenshots showing the difference in size are shown below.

As 48x48 icons do not work in 8.3 (and they were only here in one example), the option to download them has been removed. They were never documented to work by TomTom.

Download

Please refer to the licence below before downloading the files.

Before changing anything on your device, always ensure you have a FULL backup (preferably done with Windows Explorer etc and not just TomTom Home).

To download the icons zip files, either click the name or icon block below. Once unzipped, the icon names are set by default to match those used by PocketGPSWorld so can be copied straight into the map folder overwriting the original files (making sure you have a backup of them).

When large icons are being used, BOTH a standard set and a large set should be downloaded and copied. The filenames for the two icons are different (the large ones finish "_X2.bmp").

Colour Scheme and icon meanings

The colour scheme used is partially based on the PocketGPSWorld downloads themselves. The number inside is the speed limit in mph or km/h, as appropriate, when known. The first icon below is used for the speed zoned sets. The second one is used in the consolidated by type and single file sets.

In the single file version, all cameras in the Gatso, Specs and Mobile categories are together and show the "Gatso" icon. The Pending Mobile category is also included seperately and shows it's own icon.

Gatso (and other "fixed location") cameras have a standard red roundall on a white background. This category has all fixed cameras including Gatso, Truvelo, Monitron and Redspeed.
Specs cameras have a yellow background. These measure average speeds between cameras in the zone so preventing people speeding up between cameras.
Mobile cameras have a blue background. They show the locations where mobile cameras have been spotted and the site verified.
Pending mobile cameras have a black background. They are mobile sites that have been reported but not verified.
Temporary cameras are no longer used. These icons will be removed shortly
Redlight cameras show traffic lights cameras. When also operating as speed cameras when the lights are on green, they are in the speed zoned "Gatso" download.
TBA cameras have not had a speed limit logged in the database. When it gets updated, it goes into the correct speed category. Speed TBA cameras exist in all categories.
Variable speed limit cameras are shown with an asterix in the middle instead of a speed limit. These are currently in the ATM sections of the M25 and M42.

Notes

The speed zoned icons can be copied and renamed for non UK or Europe cameras (eg the UK set could also be used for the USA and the Europe set for Australia etc). The consolidated by type and single file sets can be copied and renamed for any country/continent.

Note that not all of the possible variations are actually used by the PocketGPSWorld database. They are included here for completeness. It is expected that the number of non-UK categories in use will rise as more locations are added. Having extra icons loaded does not count towards the overall limit of categories allowed.
