KITES

Minigem in a tipstand my big 10metre octopus kite

Kites are a wonderfull way to waste time! I can go to my favourite flying site near Malham Tarn with the intention of spending half an hour or so, and next thing I know 2 hours have passed. I particularly enjoy slack line " trick " flying, which is very absorbing and bliss when done in conjunction with an mp3 player. The drawings above are a couple of sketches I did of my favourite kites, the Minigem by Benson kites and my BIG 10 metre octopus parafoil kite by Flying Empress Kites.

All around the UK kite festivals of various sizes take place and to give you some idea of the more spectacular big kites you can see at a festival, have a look at At this photo Ria took at Bristol kite festival in 2000.

The photo below is myself (on the left) and Alan Poxon, a professional kitemaker, flying a pair of El Macho sportkites up near Street Gate on Malham Moor. Compared to normal sport kites, these are BIG (about 9 foot wingspan) and you can tell they generate quite a pull by the way we are leaning back. This was my first experience of team/pairs flying, and even though we only did basic maneouvres, I really enjoyed the experience.
