Farewell Philippe

Kingsholm 23 August 1997 - The Stoop 23 February 2002

FEW of the Cherry and White supporters who were present at Kingsholm on Saturday 23 August 1997 will ever forget the buzz of eager anticipation around the ground that greeted French international star winger Philippe Saint Andre´ on his first appearance for Gloucester.

A captain of France 34 times in 69 games, who had become a living legend in his home country, Philippe quickly went on to achieve cult status at the most parochial of English rugby clubs. Two tries on his league debut in a local derby against old rivals Bristol quickly dispelled any lingering doubts the Shed may have had concerning foreign imports. In no time at all 'Les Marseillaise' became the anthem of The Shed and a popular offering for the Lydbrook Band as a prelude to any match at Kingsholm - even if no one knew the words!

In 1998 Gloucester’s Director of Rugby Richard Hill departed, having lost the confidence of owner Tom Walkinshaw, as he showed the hard business edge of professional rugby in the Premiership.

Gloucester fans have always idolised their home-grown players and demand their team to do well. They also worshiped Philippe as a player and really wanted him to succeed as the newly appointed coach.

At that time the Cherry and Whites boasted too many players but very little success. Time for difficult decisions to be made. Time for the ‘collective.’ The squad was radically trimmed - established popular local players were amongst those soon dispensed with. A culture shock at Kingsholm!

No easy decisions but Philippe grasped the nettle.

From facing an annual battle against relegation Gloucester now looked a much better balanced team. True, a more cosmopolitan team, as Philippe has drawn heavily upon his contacts within France. A strong side, inconsistent yes but his side, who on their day can now beat anyone.

3rd place in 2000, the following season a semi-final spot in the Heineken European Cup 2001 and this season, who knows?

Sure there have been mistakes. There have been questions regarding his coaching methods and his man-management style, so it could be for the best that his contract at Kingsholm is not being renewed. But nobody can doubt Philippe’s efforts and commitment. Thanks to his recruitment and TW’s investment, Gloucester are in better shape than three years ago.

His emotion and tears at the Stoop before his last match in charge gave an indication of what rugby and his passion for Gloucester rugby, meant to Philippe and the Cherry and White supporter’s regard for the man. He received a huge ovation before the match and after the game was mobbed by the fans. Saturday 23rd February 2002. The end of an era.

Tales of team discontent seemed far away as his players lifted him aloft and the travelling Shedheads roared their support as the chant ‘Philippe, Philippe’, echoed round The Stoop.

A pity the last act was not played out at Kingsholm but there was no doubt of the sentiments expressed. Other doubts remain however.

Who will replace him? Will there now be an exodus of players?

Time alone will tell.

Never a dull moment at Kingsholm.

Au Revoir Philippe.
