Welcome to
the home of the Gosport Model Yacht & Boat Club. If you're not sure where we are follow the link to FIND us. Want somewhere to stay around Gosport? click here Want somewhere to stay around Fareham? click here Although known as Walpole Lakes and immediately adjoining Walpole Park, we are in fact in South Street, Gosport. If searching by postcode use PO12 1FA. We are virtually opposite the Police Station and The Town Hall, barely 100 yards from Gosport's famous Discovery Centre. Click on the event button below for which you require information. The problems and difficulties associated with the last eight months or so’s blanket weed growth are well known to members and it will have become evident to visitors and casual observers that the club’s sailing programme has been badly hit. The weed growth has rendered the main lake unsailable, as well as looking particularly unattractive to visitors. Negotiations have been progressing during this time but it has been difficult to obtain the formal approval of Natural England (this is needed because the lakes are within a designated SSSI) to a treatment programme to overcome the problem. A trial has been agreed in principle but the details of how this will be implemented, tested and monitored have not yet been agreed. It is therefore not possible to state categorically what will be done and when but members, visitors and observers may start to see some activity, which might commence with the main lake taking on a blueish tinge once a dye product has been introduced. The product to be introduced in the trial is Dyofix Blue (Dyofix’s web site www.dyofix.co.uk provides more detailed information) although from the club’s perspective, it is non toxic, is not harmful to living organisms, especially the lagoon sand shrimp protected by the SSSI, but is intended to prevent algal growth by reducing the amount of UV light passing through the water, which ultimately encourages weed growth. The details of the timing and the full trial implications have not yet been finalised but the club is pleased to report the continued support and excellent working relationship with Gosport Borough Council. Unfortunately it is considered that until the situation has been stablilised, the club cannot continue with it’s 2011 sailing programme. Further information can be obtained from the Model Yachting Association and the Club web site. Some club events are scheduled to continue where possible using the small lake although all users of the small lake are reminded to observe appropriate hygiene precautions when doing so. Specific details regarding club events can be obtained from the Sailing Secretary, Dave Cox or the respective Class Captains.
If you wish to view club newsletters it is recommended to initially find the Latest Newsletter Page as the ALL Newsletters has a growing number of images that may take some users longer to download. Look out for our clubhouse with plentiful car parking immediately adjacent. |
