Baptism

Are you willing to the best of your ability to give the child a Christian upbringing within the family of Christ's Church?

God Parents

There are no rules on the number of God-parents. However those wishing to be God-parents should be committed Christian believers. An adult grasp of the Christian faith is needed because the role of a God-parent is to be responsible for the spiritual development of your child. It is usual to have three godparents, two of the same sex as the child and one of the opposite sex, but to have one godfather and one godmother is sufficient.

To qualify for baptism a person must live in the parish of the church where they wish to be baptised. This is because it is preferable that a child should be baptised at his or her parish church or the church the parents normally attend. If, however, there are strong past links with a particular church (eg. Parents brought up or married in the parish etc.), then a minister may allow for this, providing the permission of the local minister has been sought and granted.

Baptisms at St. Sebastian’s take place on Sundays at 12.30pm. Usually, not more than two bookings are taken for any one Sunday, in order to keep the event more intimate. To enquire about a booking, please phone the Parish Office (01476-565737). We normally arrange the baptism date six weeks after inquiry in order for parents to attend church a few times over this period.

As a Parent or Godparent you should ask yourself:

Will you help the child to be regular in public worship and in prayer, not only by your teaching but also by your example and your prayers?
