HOW MANY STEPS WILL GRAHAM WALK?

Anyone who donated at least £5 could have entered my little competition
, how many steps will I take on the walk?  Guess the number of steps with my walking boots on; so this includes door to door for each day's accommodation, getting lost, perambulations around towns and villages on route, but will exclude the evening trip to the pub!  So 290 miles, plus?????  Nearest to the total wins a prize which I will personally donate.  I will be wearing a pedometer and that reading is final!

Sorry, your too late to enter now, the closing date was the last day of the walk Monday 7th May 2007.

So, the answer…

I walked 643,182 steps.  That's about 321,591 with each foot, for the two people who were trying to define what a step is!  The two pedometers gave different readings, so that's an average, but no-one was that close to affect the result.

And the winner is…

The nearest guess was from Mike and Karen, friends from the trip boat Rose of Hungerford.  Congratulations, and a prize next time I see you.

My own estimate?  I underestimated by nearly 25,000 steps, so only came fourth.  A heavy pack, plus steeper than expected hills, plus some dawdling plus about half a dozen navigational errors overall, make the difference.
