How to Create a Map for Half Life - Getting Started

I had loads of problems to overcome when I first felt the "Mapping" urge.  I didn't know the first thing about mapping so didn't even know what to look for.  I asked a friend and he told me, but it was over my head at that time.  I did searches on the internet and found loads of stuff, but what was I making?  Was it called a mod?  A map?  I just felt that I couldn't find a basic enough "get started" page so, if you want to look at mapping...... good luck! 

Current Steam Problems that I am experiencing:

When I double click Hammer to open it, it comes back with a box saying, "could not open game at this time" or something like that anyway.  If this happens, just close the box and open Hammer again.  It should work this time.

Anyway, if you can get steam to work, look under tools, there you will find Source SDK.  Open this.

Open the Hammer Editor, you are now in the map making program and the list below is all to do with getting started.  The first item on the list is for the VERC Network Forums and you will end up using this a lot to search for answers.
