Greg Brown Furniture - Wood

I love to use wood from sustainably managed local sources.  My preferences are for Elm and Cedar of Lebanon.

Elm is a hardwood, almost as hard as oak, but with a much wilder, more varied grain. The colour can vary from light to quite dark within the same board. To show off the intense grain and figure, my designs in elm usually have simple lines.

Cedar of Lebanon is a softwood, much easier to work than elm, and with a more peaceful figure. This wood suits both furniture with simple lines or the more traditional country styles. Cedar of Lebanon has the remarkable feature of continuing to give off a lovely aroma throughout its life. Unfortunately, this wood is not easy to obtain, and so I sometimes use other woods.

To protect the wood Danish oil is usually applied.  This is followed by the application of a wax blending the hardness of carauba with the soft sheen of beeswax.
