London in a Day

The most exciting city in the world. It has everything from Roman remains to modern skyscrapers. There are many free museums and galleries featuring the world's greatest treasures. There are over 200 theatres featuring fringe shows and blockbuster musicals. Live music venues to suit all tastes from classical concerts to all-night clubs. London's multicultural society is reflected in the restaurants offering cuisine from all over the world.

If your time is limited and you want to see as much possible in one day, then this tour is for you. Starting at the Tower of London you will see the crown jewels, the beefeaters and the execution site of 3 queens of England. Then on to Buckingham Palace to watch the pageantry of the Changing of the Guard (note guard change may not be everyday). Via Trafalgar Square to Covent Garden for lunch, we then head to Westminster.You will see The Houses of Parliament (Big Ben) and Downing Street, the home of the Prime Minister. A visit to Westminster Abbey is a must. This is the church where all the coronations since 1066 have taken place. It is the final resting place of a number of monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth I and Henry V. We can finish the day in a traditional pub. The best way to see London is on foot and public transport. The Tower of London

If you visit only one place in London then you must visit the Tower of London. Building started in the 11th Century and in its time has been an observatory, an armoury, a royal residence, a mint, a zoo, a prison and a place of execution. See the 'Beefeaters', the Ravens and the Crown Jewels.

Churches

Westminster Abbey. Westminster, meaning church in the west, was established 1000 years ago. It has seen all the coronations since 1066, royal weddings and funerals. It is the final resting place of many monarchs, statesmen, scientists and writers.

St Paul's Cathedral was established in early 7th century. The present building was completed in 1710 by Sir Christopher Wren. Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married here in 1981. Admiral Nelson and the Duke of Wellington are buried here.

Museums

Yes! London can be expensive but you could spend weeks in the many FREE musuems. The British Museum has some of the world's greatest treasures including the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon Sculptures (Elgin Marbles). The Imperial War Museum has probably the world's most definitive guide to warfare and in complete contrast, The Victoria and Albert Museum examines the history of art and design.

Galleries

The National Gallery is a collection of European art dating from 13th Century. The collection has works by Van Gogh, Constable, Da Vinci and Rembrandt. Tate Britain focuses on British art up to the 19th century with a gallery dedicated to Turner. Tate Modern features 20th and 21st century works from artists such as Picasso, Dali, Warhol and Damien Hirst
