Photographing a large scheduled event requires a good degree of forward planning, and on the spot decision making. Unlike the regular press photographers I tend to take a documentary approach and work more discretely unless I am the official photographer. As a parent myself, I understand the recent concerns around the photography of minors, to this end I follow the independent film makers code of conduct which respects the privacy of minors and involves contacting the police and event organisers with my intentions, wearing visible identification, and destroying or modifying potentially harmful images. Regular festivals offer the opportunity to pre-plan to a certain extent, although the details usually change, its often a case of having one eye down the lens and the other looking for the next shot.
