"You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth "    Kalil Gibran

"Preparation"  by  Jeni  Couzyn

We are the tribe of women, oldest alliance in the life of mankind.  Intent as prehistoric beasts

We lumber into this place of preparation that has become our watering hole, our centre point, and our thought all inward.

Julie Tortora's Yoga for Pregnancy classes, in the Crouch End area of North London, are a safe and enjoyable way of keeping fit and relaxed throughout pregnancy. They provide thorough preparation for labour by developing strength, confidence and relaxation skills and are held in a calm and friendly home environment where women can share their experiences and be supportive to one another. They are suitable whether or not you have practiced Yoga before

In pregnancy the ligaments supporting the joints soften to allow more space at birth.  It is important, therefore, not to perform strong stretches during this time. The class focuses on gentle exercises which are designed to keep the whole body supple and strong. Special attention is paid to the pelvic area with squatting practice and pelvic floor toning. A series of exercises are also included to strengthen the lower back so as to prevent or alleviate pain. Active birth positions are practiced so that the body is accustomed to them before labour.

Pregnancy can be an anxious time and learning to relax the body and mind at will is extremely beneficial. This is achieved by guided body relaxation and focusing on the breath. Learning to lengthen the exhalation is crucial to relaxation and is also ideal preparation for managing contractions. Full, steady breathing also  increases energy and improves mood.

The months leading up to birth are a time of intense mental preparation. Readiness for labour and motherhood and a sense of bonding with the baby in the womb can all be assisted by the use of creative visualization. This is practiced during relaxation.
