Questions and
answers Q) I have lost my hair, will it grow back? A) If you have lost your hair through chemotherapy, predictably your hair will be lost during treatment and will regrow once treatment has finished. Unfortunately, with alopecia, there is nothing predictable. There really is no way of telling if, or when, your hair will grow back. Q) Why me???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A) There really is no definitive answer. It is thought to be an an auto-immune response caused by certain stresses or drugs. Other hair-loss triggers include chemicals in our environment, as well as those in medicines and in treatments such as chemotherapy or in anticoagulants, some amphetamines and in thyroid medications. Chemicals in cosmetics, some shampoos or hair dyes can affect the hair. Chemicals in foodstuffs and poor nutrition are also possible factors. Some women experience a genetic predisposition to losing head hair. Q) How can I be sure my wig is secured my head? A) Wigs all come with adjustable tags on either side of the head. These can be tightened to make the fit more secure and will need to be tightened regularly over a period of time as wear and washing will loosen the fit. Wig tape is available for added security if you feel necessary to use. Personally I have always felt confident that my wig is secure. Q) How do I put on my wig? A) Hold the wig at the sides and then slip it on to your head. Adjust it so that the front of the wig looks like your hairline at the front and both sides are level. If you have your own hair then this needs to be secured with pins or a wig cap before putting the wig on your head. Q) Is it uncomfortable to wear a wig? A) As long as you are not wearing it too tight, then yes, they are comfortable. I always think it’s a bit like wearing a bra: you don’t notice you have it on but when you take it off it is a relief. Q) Can I sleep in my wig? A) You can, but it is probably best not to, not only for the condition of the wig but also for your comfort. In my experience if you are not comfortable being bald in bed then wear a scarf, preferably 100 per cent cotton fabric as these are less likely to slip off your head during the night. Q) Are there any conventional treatments? A) Yes, these involve steroid creams or tablets, UVA light treatment and a treatment where a cream is applied to your skin to create an ethma type reaction. I believe there are also further treatments available. Q) Alternative treatments? A) I have tried homeopathy, reflexology, reiki, acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, spiritual healing and taking nutritional supplements. Unfortunately, nothing worked for me. Some treatments did however make me feel nice and calm and relaxed but others were extremely painful and tasted vile. I once tried rubbing nut oil into my feet and the palms of my hands as it was thought the hair follicles had become so dry no hair could grow. This was very unpleasant and very greasy. I even rubbed oil containing ginger on to my head, which burnt a bit, then I proceeded to hit my scalp with a small hammer of pins... yes, I know, very strange! Q) Eyebrows and eyelashes A) Eyebrows can be pencil drawn and false eyelashes can be bought. Personally I find this all a bit of a pain and do not bother; however, I am currently looking into the best options available in both make-up and semi-permanent tattoos. Q). How do I clean my wig? A) Synthetic wigs need to be washed in special wig shampoo. First brush, then add shampoo to wash basin and fill with COLD water. Let soak for five minutes, swish the wig gently, NEVER RUB. Rinse gently in cold water twice or until thoroughly rinsed. Apply generous amounts of wig conditioner and gently work through hair with fingertips. Rinse thoroughly with cold water. Drain and blot gently with towel. DO NOT SQUEEZE OR WRING. Allow to dry naturally. DO NOT USE A HAIRDRYER, THIS WILL MELT YOUR WIG. Brush when completely dry Real hair wigs can be washed in normal MILD shampoo and conditioned with normal conditioner. They can be left to dry naturally or a hairdryer can be used. Q) How do I brush my wig? A) Certain hair brushes are not suitable for wigs as they can damage them. I have brushes available for purchase or can give advice whether the brushes you already have are suitable Q) How do I style my wig? A). Your wig can be styled by using a wig brush, a wire pick or your fingertips. Your wig was designed with a basic style but the variations you can achieve through styling are limitless. Added height can be achieved by gently lifting with the brush. If you want added fullness as well, tease and then smooth the surface over the teasing. To return your wig to it’s basic style simply brush thoroughly. Q) How long will my wig last? A) Synthetic wigs will stay in good condition for three to four months In my experience they start to look a bit “tired” after the fourth month and can become frizzy on the ends. Also they will loosen. Of course, you can tighten them, but if you have to tighten too much then the fit will be affected. Anyway, after three to four months you will probably fancy a change and even an image change Real hair wigs will last longer - about a year to 18 months Q) Do I need to own more than one wig at a time? A) It is possible to get by with just one but obviously the more you own the longer they will last. “I can’t come out tonight I’m washing my hair,” really does become a valid excuse, but only if you have one wig. Q) How much will my wig cost? A) Prices for synthetic wigs range from around £65 to £225 (exclusive of VAT). Real hair wigs are around £1,000 pounds (exclusive of VAT). In addition to this price you will need to pay for the hair to be cut and styled. Please note that people who suffer from alopecia or have lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy are exempt from paying VAT on wigs. Generally, only real hair wigs need to be cut and styled. Q) What hair care products will I need to purchase? A) Synthetic wigs need to be washed in special wig shampoo and conditioner. A product called “wig lustre” can be help to make your wig look better for longer. There is also a spray on conditioner available. Normal hair care products can be used on real hair wigs. Q) What hair accessories do you sell? A) Brushes, it is recommended that only certain hair brushes be used on wigs as some can cause damage. Scrunchies are available to tie around medium and longer length wigs. Q) Do I need a stand for my wig? A) Polystyrene stands are available to buy but these are not essential.
