Notes for: WILLIAM TURNEY


The first of the Turney families to appear in Sedgebrook. The baptism of their son Leonard is the earliest entry but there is a further interesting entry which reads :- Mary Turney a widow bur 26th January 1717.

The Will of WILLIAM TURNEY of SEDGEBROOK, proved at LINCLON in 1730.
In the name of God Amen. I WILLIAM TURNEY of SEDGEBROOK in the County of LINCOLN, yeoman, coming weak and indisposed in body but of sound disposing mind and memory thanks be to Almighty God do make ordain, constitute and appoint this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following. First principally I give and recommend my soul unto the hands of the Almighty God who gave it, hoping through the merits and satisfaction of my dear Redeemer to have free pardon and forgiveness for all my sins. My body I recommend to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors, herein aftermentioned and as touching what temporal Estate the Lord has bestowed upon me I give and dispose of as follows :-

My will is that my Executors herein aftermentioned pay all my debts against all Funeral charges.

I give and bequest unto my three children WILLIAM TURNEY, ELISABETH TURNEY and THOMAS TURNEY sixty pounds to be paid them and to each of them when they shall attain the age of 22 years and in case any of the children dye before
they arrive at the said age of 22 years that then their part of the portion shall divide equally amongst the surviving children. And further my will is that the said children above mentioned shall maintain board free during their said years.

Then I give unto my daughter MARY WARREN one shilling and also one shilling to any person claiming under me.

Lastly all my goods and chattels, quick and deasd, movable and immovable unbequested I give and bequeath unto MARY TURNEY, my loving wife and JOHN TURNEY my elder son whom I do joyn Executors of this my last will and
testament, appointing EDMUN. HARRISON and THOMAS WARREN trustees to see this my last will performed to whom I give five shillings each to buy them a pair of gloves. And I do hereby evoke disannul and make void all former wills by me
heretofore made, declaring this my last Will and Testament, whereunto as Testimony I have set my hand and seal this 17th day of March 1728.

William was one of the Churchwardens for Sedgebrook in 1717/18 and 1723

Inside the church of St Lawrence is the following inscription upon William's grave.
Here lieth the body of WILLIAM TURNEY who departed this life ? March 1729 aged 48. Here lieth the body of JO------- who departed this life --22 1797 aged 73 years.
