[Written by his daughter Winifred Charlotte]
I believe my father became a junior clerk in a firm trading with China after he left school - Lownds was the name of the principal - and he became a Partner after some years. He was 22 and my mother was 20 when they married. Burton , Arthur and Hugh must have been about 12, 10 and 6 when Lowndes went bankrupt. There had been a typhoon in Hong Kong and their warehouses, ships in harbour and all that was in them went west, literally, but the firm paid 20s in the pound - and all was settled bar the actual paying over of the money when my father's solicitor forged his name, withdrew his share of the creditor's money and skiddadled to America. He was caught but the money was missing. It was then that my father did something which I do not know if it was wise or not - he paid his share of the firm's liabilities out of his own pocket - and never got level again - with a young family, I do not know.
