Venus

The drawings of Venus shown below have been compiled from the logbooks of Christopher Taylor, and show what an experienced amateur astronomer using a moderate sized instrument at the site, can expect to see. These drawings were done at the eyepiece of the 12.5" f/7 Newtonian and in the last instance a 2" refractor.

21.ii.96, 12.5" spec. X238 + polarizer, 17h.30, Seeing IV, better in polariz. Diam =17" Ph=0.687 theoretical, < 0.6 actual. Note (i) Mottled shadings (ii) Brilliant whiteness of N.p. limb. 2.v1.96, 2" OG, X25, 20h.15, Diam = 59", Ph =0.023. This view is less than 8 days from inferior conjunction on 10th June.
8.v.96, 12.5" spec. X176, 12h.30. Seeing IV-V. Diam = 39", Ph.=0.25. Note (i) Sharpness of horns and ? extension of S. (ii) Dark markings on terminator.

On the 8th June 2004, Venus will transit (i.e. as seen from Earth will pass across the face of the) Sun. This will be visible in the UK and will take place from 6:19:54am to 12:23:36am (Transit timings for London, UK).

For people looking for a local event in the Oxfordshire area, The Museum of the History of Science, Oxford University, in collaboration with Hanwell Community Observatory is holding a free public observing event in the University Parks (at South lodge, off of South Parks Road) Oxford University, from 10:00am to 12.00 pm.
