flintshire
area real ale pubs (last
updated 4/2/2008)
Lots
of ground to cover here. Of the two biggest conurbations, forget about Buckley which has desperately little to
offer. Neighbouring Mold is better and home to a few real ale pubs
including the best Wetherspoons outlet in our
whole branch. In truth though it is to village and country that you must go
to seek your real ale inspiration. Discover a Brunning & Price
pub as well as a country house hotel
bar in Sychydn, a multi-awarding freehouse in tiny Cadole and cosy
food pubs in Cefn-y-Bedd, Higher Kinnerton, Llanfynydd and
Pontblyddyn.
Quite a few other hostelries are also real but either restricted in
their options or lack imagination with
their beer range but, hey, who are we to tell them how to run their
business?

What
Can Be Expected at the Good Beer Guide 2008 Pubs?
The
intimate Colomendy at Cadole is a past branch pub of the year
close to Loggerheads
country park. Five or so handpumps despatch a variety of independent
brews. The Gold Cape in Mold is a genuinely good Wetherspoons while the
Glasfryn close to Theatre Clwyd is a classy establishment with several
microbrewery beers. Finally the Ffwrd near Cefyn-y-Bedd is an idiosyncratic freehouse
serving a couple of unusual, often Celtic, ales.
Where else would you recommend on the ale front?
In Mold you could try
the Ruthin Castle (or Y Delyn wine bar for foreign beers) but, if you're
bizarrely stuck in Buckley on business, head to the Red Lion as it's your
only realistic chance of cask. An unusual real ale venue is the Stables bar,
part of the sumptuous Soughton Hall hotel - quite often there are Plassey or
Coach House beers here. There are two perfectly decent pubs in Higher
Kinnerton selling some familiar but well-kept regional brews while the Cross
Keys in Llanfynydd (pictured) stocks the occasional guest beer. More
guest beers can be found in Pontblyddyn at the New Inn but it's reliable
Hydes Original at the Olde Talbot in Cymau.
