The Border Hike is a challenging competitive hike for members of the Scout and Explorer sections of the Movement. The 'incident hike' format is hugely popular with the Scouts and Guides as it adds a number of dimensions to a walk through some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain.

The Border Hike took place over the weekend from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st September 2008. The competition taking place on the Saturday, presentations and results were given out on the Sunday.

The teams set out early Saturday morning. The hike starts with kit inspection and then the route co-ordinates are given out. The starts are staggered. Our first team (Hippos) had to be ready for an 8:12 start, the Rhinos were off at 8:30.

The scouts are judged on route planning, a kit check and performance at 5 "incidents" around the course. The Hammer Blow was the last incident, where the highest hit for the team was recorded.

Unfortunately it is not a timed hike, otherwise, our teams would have easily come first and second. Our Rhinos team were the first to finish (even though they started after 15 other teams). With the Hippos closely following in second place (they were the 10th team to start out). The next team in arrived over half an hour later.

After the (10 mile) hike the Scouts needed some much deserved rest and recuperation!

Results

We were not as lucky as last year. But it was a great experience and everyone had a good time.
