The Border Hike Competition is a challenging competitive hike for members of the Scout and Explorer sections of the Movement. The 'incident hike' format is hugely popular with the Scouts and Guides as it adds a number of dimensions to a walk through some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain. The competition is for teams of four scouts, one team leader, who must be 13, and three other Scouts. The combined age of the four scouts must be no more than 50. We entered two teams for this years event: "Lost!" and "Rhinos".
On Saturday morning our two teams reported in for kit inspection at 8:24 and 8:50. They went on to get their route instructions and to plan the routes, after that they were off. While they were away we took some younger scouts on a training hike to Three Shires Head, a good walk of about 10km, and good practice for next year's Border Hike. In the competition, our "Lost!" team finished over an hour ahead of any of the other teams. The next team to finish were ... Harpur Hill "Rhinos". So, for the second year running the first two teams back have been the two 3rd Buxton teams. Unfortunately, the Border Hike is not a race, but it is a challenging hike. This year many teams were unable to finish, which shows what a brilliant job our teams did navigating around the course. Sunday morning is time for the results and presentation of the prizes. Everyone gathers at the Gradbach farm house.
The "Rhinos" team achieved 2nd place and "Lost!" came in 5th. An excellent result.
