This 10.5km hike is starts in Staffordshire grit-stone country, crosses onto Derbyshire limestone and returns to Staffordshire. The scouts had been warned that we would be on the lookout for fossils, and one scout even brought along a geologist to help.
The hike started in Longnor and did an anti-clockwise circuit, initially heading south, to the east of the river Manifold, towards sheen. Just before Sheen Hill, we turned north towards Pilsbury. Here we crossed into lime-stone country, and had our lunch at Pilsbury Castle, where we found loads of fossils. We headed back to Longnor via Crowdicote, We resisted the temptation to climb High Wheeldon, choosing to turn left back towards Longnor. |
