Pre – Hawklords

Prior to joining the Hawklords in July 1978, Harvey Bainbridge had been involved in a number of performing groups. Harvey's first musical group was when he was at school.
A group of friends formed a band and Harvey, having just purchased a bass guitar and amplifier, took the bass position. The group was a rhythm and blues band, playing Chuck Berry numbers and the like.

Towards the end of the 1960's, while studying at Exeter University, Harvey became involved with an abstract poetry-music group which performed around the local area. Later still, whilst teaching, Harvey joined up with some like–minded friends to form the West Counrty band "Ark". This was early 1974 and the band set about organising their own gigs, as well as playing benefits and festivals around the Devon and Cornwall counties of Southwest England.
The bands main intention was to have a good time and give others the same. The band's sound was essentially electronic rock, yet was tinged with a strange West Coast and folk type feel too. It was good festival music and by 1975, they had acquired the help of engineer Geoff Hocking at Wolden Studios. A number of cassettes were recorded and sold to buy equipment, some from the bands live performances. By 1976, Ark were becoming fairly well known locally and were able to fill the local venues quite easily.

Members of the band at one time or another, included:
Harvey Bainbridge on bass & vocals
Reg Meuros on vocals & accoustic guitar
Kris Kausman on rhythm guitar & vocals
Paul Hayles on keyboards
Lois as dancer
Colin Mitchell on lead guitar
Norman Alman on drums & percussion
Harry Williamson on guitar & vocals
Keith Jones on drums
Martin Griffin on drums
Alastair Merry on percussion

The band made their debut vinyl airing on the compilation album 'Made In Cornwall'. Ark contributed two tracks to the album, one was an all Ark recording, while the other was backing a track by ex–Ark member Reg Meuros.

Being in the West Country, it wasn't long before Ark met up with Hawkwind. Ark's rhythm guitarist Kris Kausman had known Dave Brock for some time, and used to borrow speakers when they were putting on gigs. Ark and Hawkwind got to know eachother and during the Summer, Ark were putting on a show in Barnstaple. Harvey asked Dave Brock if Hawkwind would come along and head the entertainment. They readily agreed and a good time was had at the Queens Hall plus a few other shows which saw both bands on the same bill in a series of benefit gigs for free festivals that Summer.

•  10 July 1976     Barnstaple, Queens Hall
•  July 1976     Torquay, Town Hall
•  July 1976     Truro, City Hall
•  July 1976     Plymouth

Meanwhile, frienships between Ark and Hawkwind grew, and by the Summer it became apparent that both bands were interested in the same old-time festival ideas of putting on a show and enjoying just playing music.
Certain members of Hawkwind at this time were less than eager to play these types of shows, so the idea of forming a splinter group, incorporating members of both bands, bought about the "Sonic Assassins. A one-off gig was arranged in Barnstaple and featured Harvey Bainbridge, Paul Hayles and Martin Griffin from Ark, alongside Dave Brock and Bob Calvert from Hawkwind.

•  23 December 1977     Barnstaple, Queens Hall

Following the Sonic Assassins gig, Ark as a band wound up. Paul Hayles went on to replace Simon House on Hawkwind's American tour, as Simon was joining up with David Bowie for a world tour. Weeks later and Hawkwind broke up following traumatic scenes on the tour as openers to 'Detective'.

Hawklords On

Hawkwind rose again and became the "Hawklords". With Adrian Shaw no longer in the band, they were looking for another bass player. Harvey Bainbridge was auditioned and joined the band that Summer, with his first gig in October at the Apollo in Oxford.

It was during the Summer of 1981 (while recording the Hawkwind album 'Sonic Attack'), that Harvey really began dabbling in the delights of the synthesiser. Whilst Martin Griffin was laid up with German Measles, Harvey Bainbridge and Dave Brock began laying down ideas that would eventually become the electronic album 'Church Of Hawkwind'.
From then on, Harvey progressively switched over to keyboards and synths, interested by their sound and the possibilities offered by an effective knowledge of how they functioned.

With the Hawkwind spaceship experiencing a rather quiet spell following their February tour in 1983, Harvey used this time to work on a couple of projects of his own.
The first was a solo track that was to appear on the 'Hawkwind Friends And Relations (Twice Upon A Time)' album. Called 'The Changing', it featured Harvey and session drummer Keith Jones from Barnstaple. Keith was a friend from the days of Ark and had also been in the seventies band 'Flying Fortress'.

Following this, Harvey worked with friend Norman Alman on the 'Alman Mulo Band' cassette album 'Mamissi', under the pseudonym of 'Waki Gimbo Junior'. The album was privately released in December 1983. They later acquired the services of sax player Dave Fischer and a young singer. With this line up, the Alman Mulo Band performed a number of gigs around 1984 and 1985.
Elsewhere, the beginning of September saw Harvey perform an electronic set alongside Dave Brock and Nik Turner at the UK Electronica event in Milton Keynes as "Uncle Nik and The E.T's".

•  03 September 1983     Milton Keynes, Woughton Centre, UK Electronica

At the Stonehenge Free Festival in June 1984, Harvey made way for bass player Alan Davey and took on the developing role of synthesisers within the Hawkwind sound.

Harvey's collaboration with Norman Alman continued during the mid-eighties. Inbetween recording and touring with Hawkwind, Harvey and Norman got down to recording the second and third 'Alman Mulo Band' cassette albums. 'Orisha', the second album, was released in November 1985 and was followed shortly after by 'Invisible Warrior', appearing in March 1986.

Musicians involved with recording were:
Harvey Bainbridge on synths, vocals, guitar & bass
Norman Alman on percussion, guitar & vocals
Sue Newman on backing vocals
Andrew Shaddick on horn

A period of four years elapsed before a new album was recorded. Early 1990 saw the band return to the studio for sessions that would bare 'Afrodiziac Dreamtime', the band's fourth album. It was a creative time, with the band laying down perhaps the best set of Alman Mulo Band tracks to date. Every number had more punch and the sounds Harvey was now getting from his synths saw a huge jump in complexity and effect, very reminiscent of the passages he used to fill the lul between the end of one Hawkwind song and the beginning of the next.
The album was released in August 1990, again as a private tape and proved their most successful.

Musicians involved with recording were:
Harvey Bainbridge on synths & vocals
Norman Alman on percussion, guitar & vocals
Phil Deacon on bass
Ritchie Winnearls on vocals
Grant Oatley on vocals

Harvey Bainbridge left Hawkwind in April 1991, following a tour of Europe that wasn't one of Harvey's most memorable. Bar a few months away from the band in the 1980's, Harvey had been in the band for almost thirteen years.

Solo Years

Following his departure from Hawkwind, Harvey began work on a film score and also a CD Rom that combined electronic music with 3D animation.
Later in the year, Harvey performed at a benefit gig in Bristol for 'International Hostage Release', alongside Norman Alman, Richard Chadwick and Huw Lloyd Langton. The set was a mixture of Hawkwind and Alman Mulo Band numbers. Another project keeping Harvey occupied, was work with the Hawkwind covers band 'Friends And Relations'.

•  02 September 1991     Bristol, Fleece And Firkin

By 1993, Harvey began to feel the need to work on something more complex and humorous. Thus the 'Interstellar Chaos' album began to unfold. Harvey had a bundle of tapes from material he used to slot inbetween Hawkwind songs, some of these were reworked and expanded upon for an album that saw Harvey on all instruments.

With the recording of the album under his belt, Harvey began to take his ideas and transform them into the live arena with a series of one–off performances.
The first was at Porthcawl, where Harvey was special guest and played a solo set, along with the 'Friends And Relations' band for their performance. Also appearing at the event was 'The Lloyd Langton Group', 'Nik Turner's Fantastic All Stars', 'S.E.X', 'Foreplay' and 'Peachfuzz'.

Later in the Summer, Harvey supported 'Doctor Brown' at Southsea, who by this time had ex–Hawkwind guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton on board.

Musicians involved with recording were:
Harvey Bainbridge on synths & vocals
Norman Alman on percussion, guitar & vocals

The second Porthcawl event occurred at the beginning of June 1994, with Harvey again appearing. The day also featured 'The Lloyd Langton Group', 'Roy Harper', 'S.E.X'' and 'Friends And Relations'.
Come September and another all–dayer to celebrate Hawkwind's 25th Anniversary at Cirencester saw Harvey perform, as did 'Friends And Relations', 'Huw Lloyd Langton' and 'Quickswing'.

Five years on from leaving Hawkwind, Harvey Bainbridge began working on a new studio album that was to be called 'Red Shift'. Elsewhere, another project was underway for the soundtrack to a film called 'Imitators'.
The 'Red Shift' album saw Harvey developing his ideas and structures with synths to new heights. Sound collages were worked and new sounds on the synths were searched for to make a multi-layered textured feel to the overall sound. The battery of equipment, containing a combination of old analogue synths together with modern digital machines linked to computer midi interfaces, shot Harvey into the computer age and presented the prospect of live shows of real classy sounds an definite possibility.
The 'Red Shift' album again saw Harvey on all instruments.

The annual Electronic Music And Musicians Association Festival took place in Derby at the end of May, and Harvey Bainbridge (who had finally managed to get his new studio album released) had secured the headline spot.

•  31 May 1997     Derby, Assembley Rooms, EMMA Festival

The Autumn saw a huge Hawkwind tour around the towns and cities of Britain. Harvey supported the band at Rhyl and Newport, putting on a fine performance of material from 'Red Shift', together with Hawkwind numbers 'Coded Languages' and 'Dream Worker'.

•  03 November 1997   Rhyl, New Pavillion Theatre
•  06 November 1997     Newport, The Centre

The following year saw Harvey continue to perform at one–off gigs, together with a show as support to Alan Davey's new band 'Bedouin' in Preston, who were themselves on their first major tour of Britain.

•  09 August 1998     Altricham, Music Festival
•  September 1998     Chester, Alexanders Jazz Theatre
•  12 November 1998     Preston, The Adelphi

1999 arrived and as 'Bedouin' kicked off their second UK tour, Harvey opted to support the band at his local town once again, which brings us pretty much up to date. May will see Harvey perform live once again and will no doubt have some new material to delight with.

•  14 May 1999     Preston, The Adelphi
