WHY ARE THEY USED?
These medications lower cholesterol levels in the blood. High levels of cholesterol
will narrow the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle (coronary arteries) and
put you at risk of having a heart attack or developing worsening angina.

HOW DO THEY WORK?
‘Statins’ inhibit the production of certain chemicals involved in the formation
of cholesterol in the liver.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR:
• You may experience a headache.
• If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, please notify
  your GP promptly.
• Please ask your practice nurse if you would like more information about healthy eating.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS-
All cholesterol lowering medications should be taken in conjunction with a low fat
diet.
It is more effective to take these tablets before you go to bed in the evening.
