This year's Loch Lomond Challenge Triathlon, sponsored by the Loch Lomond Highland Games, was possibly the most successful yet, hosting as it did the Scottish leg of The Celtic Challenge (the annual Scotland v Ireland v Wales Triathlon series). The Lomond, which should comprise a 1500m loch swim, 27.5 mile cycle and six mile run, is rather notorious in triathlon circles for its variable swim leg and yet again lived up to its reputation with this year's course being contested over a generous 2000m.
This year's race was finally won by Fergus MacLean in 2.18.14 with Grant Howells (Wales), Adrian Pottinger (Scotland) and Adrian Devine (Ireland) taking second, third and fourth places respectively. First female to finish in 2.36.30 was Joanne Howells, making it a double for the Welsh team in the Senior category.
However, with Scotland taking first position in the male and female veteran categories (Stan Stewart 2.32.57, Mary Rose Cross 2.49.41) and repeating this double in the Junior category (Daniel McKeating 2.32.05, Beth Saddler 2.42.32), victory was finally secured for the host country with Wales in second and Ireland third.

First Lomond Tri Club member out of the water was Super Vet Malcolm Minto in 24th place but five miles and seven miles into the cycle he was overtaken by club mates Paul Cook and Jim Shields respectively. With Graeme Hawick and Bobby Shields passing Malcolm around the 20 mile mark and Jim overhauling Paul Cook near the end of the cycle course, the final order was established by the time they started on a gruelling hilly run course. First home was Jim Shields to take the Ron Trail Memorial Trophy in 2.47.18. Jim also continued his recent winning run of events taking first place in the Super Vet category (25th overall). Lomond's other results included Paul Cook 34th (12th Male Vet) in 2.55.13, Graeme Hawick 40th (18th Male Senior) in 2.59.12, Bobby Shields 41st (3rd Male Super Vet) in 2.59.35, Malcolm Minto 46th (4th Male Super Vet) in 3.13.43, and Janice Hawick 49th (9th Female Senior) in 2.23.56.
