The success of the Lomond Junior Triathlon in May has encouraged us to organise a Junior Aquathlon alongside our Helensburgh Bicentenary Triathlon on 25th August. Polo shirts, bicentenary medals, goody bags ... don't miss it!
Hatty is still waiting for results from the GB squad selection race at Rivington in June (though we're told she probably came 4th and so will not be in the GB team in Austria this year). It was her first open-water race - nothing daunted, she plans to tackle the Lomond Highland Games Triathlon in July. Stuart has already put his entry in so expect some childish bickering on the start line since she won't be able to keep up with him after that! I hear a puncture spoiled his race at the British Junior National (U19) Championship on 23rd June. Charlotte is looking forward to starting school at prestigious Bellahouston Academy in September, specialising in athletics.
Fiona Lothian has organised an expanded list of kid's Aquathlon races after Liz Broad's very successful series last year. A full list can be found on the STA website.
Most of our juniors live in Helensburgh and swim with the Helensburgh ASC. Training varies depending on competition commitments but most of them are members of the Helensburgh Amateur Athletics Club and train there on Monday nights, followed by a hill-sprint session with Fearless Frank, their very own Ironman. Those that compete in cross-country competitions also have extra HAAC running on Thursday nights and often a further session with excellent Athletics Club coach Chris Colmer after their Sunday bike session. See the club training schedule for more details. They are also given advice on such things as nutrition and other preparation for events.
They have taken over an old coachhouse as a clubroom where they can spin on their turbo-trainers without (hopefully) disturbing the neighbours' Sunday peace and quiet and generally chill out and boast about their successes. I hear rumours that wild colour schemes are being dreamed up!
