pre-raceJust a week after the Prestwick Aquathon and again part of the STA Aquathon Series, this event took place in the palatial surroundings of Perth Leisure Pool. start Due, perhaps, to the lack of a local Triathlon club, or the timing (first week of the school holidays when Scots rush abroad to beat the English invasion & increased prices), there was a much reduced field. pre-race However, this resulted in a particularly friendly atmosphere which can only have benefited the 'newbies'. Miraculously, the rain held off: the marshals pre-racedid their usual excellent job: Jim Scanlan manned the water station (a golden opportunity for the kids to practice the difficult art of drinking on the run - not so necessary on a short race on a cool day like this one, but increasingly vital as they move on to longer races). Great scones + drinks provided at the finish, too.

Jim (wearing his 'STA fast-track coach' hat) also gave a post-race seminar briefly introducing triathlon and the STA, giving an idea of the recommended distances for each age group and the kit needed for each discipline. I'm not sure I agree with his list for cycle and run sections - Hatty completed the full novice distance at Turriff the other week dressed only in her swimsuit but obviously more protection is needed for events outside the summer months and of course for training. We were also provided with useful lists of STA-affiliated clubs, the 2001 race calendar and a 'who's who' list of STA committee members.

Liz had also produced a revised list of events in the Aquathon series - Livingstone has been postponed from the 14th July until 23rd September, and we will be at Leith Academy (Edinburgh) instead. There will also be an additional race at Merrick Pool in Newton Stewart on 29th July (the day after Dundee) and more races are in the pipeline at Aberdeen and Glasgow as well as our own at Balloch which we hope to hold on 2nd September.

Apart from the excellent scones and carbohydrate drinks at the finish, the kids were provided with a snack of roll, fruit and drink by the Leisure Centre, who also provided some of the very impressive haul of spot prizes - Hatty spotand Charlotte both came home with EP-CDs of David Gray and Paul Weller!!!
