I am a disabled person who has recently taken up the hobby of competing at local shows, mainly with pansies, but also pot grown cabbages and pom pom dahlias. The first season was a disaster, I had no idea about pansies and was ashamed of my so-called exhibits. I picked up the address of our Society's secretary, and explaining to him my position, asked if he could help in any way. By return of post I received a most kind letter as well as a copy of Rodney Fuller's Complete Guide. That was July 1996, the help and advice that our Secretary has given me since then is beyond the call of duty, nor must I forget his most pleasant wife. He has gone out of his way to help me with everything from cultivation to staging. We have by now become good friends and sponsors of BT!*!
By July of this year I was ready with my pansies and my staging equipment of boards and boxes. I have entered 7 shows including Cardigan, Aberystwyth and Lampeter and have been awarded 6 first and 4 seconds. Although some are only small local shows, the competition in the marquee is fever pitch! Everyone seems to be a pansy expert, but when they saw my exhibits complete with collars they were amazed. I do hope that members appreciate the work that our secretary does, for the pleasure that a local exhibitor like myself has had during the summer is out of this world, I am proud to be a member of such a wonderful Society.
