I was first interested in flying model helicopters when I saw a relation of mine with his in about 1997. I grilled him for information and he recommended that I learn to fly aeroplanes first to get used to orientation and using the controls.
I started to learn fixed wing flying with Daren and his dad. I will not pretend I was a natural ! After a few months (and more than a few crashes) I decided to join the local club and learnt to fly quite quickly.
I got quite good with a plane and I had almost given up on helicopters when a couple of members of the club came up with new helicopters. It turned out that they had learnt to hover them years ago.
Fortunately for me that was all they had learnt and I was soon the proud owner of a ditched Nexus 30 which had been the result of a very eventful first taste of circuit flying for our chairman !
I rebuilt the Nexus and Daren started to teach me how to fly the helicopter. During the time I was building the Nexus I downloaded the FMS simulator and I had spent HOURS practicing
Daren's help and the sim work paid off as by the end of the first day I managed a full tank hover !!
My tutor pushed me quite hard at times but I am very grateful for his help and advice especially in pointing me towards a good model !
This weekend I managed my lowest inverted hover to date. ( Not as low as Daren (UNDERSTATEMENT !) but I'm improving !!)
