Diary.....

February 6th 2005

Dear Diary,

Please forgive me as I have sinned! it's been nearly a year since my last update...

OK you ask what the hell have you been doing all this time,

Not a lot really had some major personal changes in 2004 and its seems to have killed the thrill of flying helicopters, I enjoy flying and helping out but when Sunday comes it takes a lot to get me motivated to get to the field,

The year of 2004 has seen me crash my fury 3D twice, I was dreading the repair bill the first time but after looking at the prices for parts on motors and rotors I decided to get my parts from Ricks in the United States, They took 4 days to arrive and cost £350 that puts the fury about £150 dearer to crash than the raptor 90.

The Raptor 90 is now sat on the side looking sad I recently changed the blades from 680 to 710 this slowed the cyclic right down all the guys on runryder ranted that 710s were the way to go what a load of crap they are well slow, So I decided to play with the mixing ratio, I've moved the balls on the mixer arms to 35mm from the centre this has made the cyclic faster but it's still not as fast as the fury hence the reason its sat on the side.

I'm thinking of faster servo's and a higher capacity battery next to see if that will make a difference.

My latest new toy is a Raptor 50v2, Fitted with a ys61 st2 and musclepipe2 as you know from the front page I have been sponsored by Quick UK so my new heli had to have the complete Quick UK upgrade, Can't fault the quality of the parts, I also found out that if for any reason any of the parts fail or are damaged in a crash then Budd at Quick will bend over backwards to sort the problem out.

I've been taking it easy and running the engine in also due to the smaller disk size I've had to play with the throttle curve quite a bid to get it right, Today February 6th they are nearly right, I can do continuous climbing flips without any signs of bogging, I am tempted to try the new csm revlock but will see if I can get the heli right without it.

New skills I've learned since the last update are;

Inverted tail in with confidence, I can piro from nose to tail in while inverted without getting the shakes,

Upright backwards as well as inverted backwards flying, I can now do circuits and figure of 8s both fast and slow.

The best thrill is Auto's, I love the buzz of buggering one up and trying to get the blades spun backup before it starts to tumble, Also found that if you push the nose down to far and leave it to late to pull out it doesn't.:-(

Just purchased some night ropes and fancy a spot of night flying, so watch this space in about a year for another update....

19th May 2004

After extreme pressure from fellow flyers I'm forced to update my page,

I've now put about four gallons through the tempest 3D, the first couple of
flights were fun what with getting the mixture right then I managed to pop a
glow plug while cutting the grass inverted, The thoughts rushed through my
brain should I hit negative hard and try to flip out using what was left of
the head speed or try to land it inverted.
I took the second option; I kept the blades off of the ground while the head
speed decayed,
The blades were almost stopped when it touch down as it came to rest the
blades folded back and the heli fell over.

The tempest FAI hasn't seen a lot of use, I'm running mine on coolpower !5%
this combined with 7.75 gear ratio provides me with a quiet but powerful
set-up, the straight-line speed is breathtaking but it struggled doing high
g maneuvers, I've just replaced the SAB 710 blades with BBT 700's This is a
lot better. I've heard a rumor that if you throw the FAI around too much
then it will pop links on the head; I'm not sure how true this is but it
plays on my mind as I throw the heli around.
If you slow the head speed down to 1400 the heli becomes really stable its
great for practicing those slow low down backwards circuits.

Damage report!!
I thought this was going to be bad all I kept thinking about was my canopy,
The end result was 3 plastic servo gears.
The downside of having a viper head in a fury is if you have a problem with
the angled plug you (unless you have the proper tool) have to remove the
head or engine,
The problems I've been having running 30% coolpower is I keep blowing plugs
sometimes both together, I've checked the mixture by engine temperature but
even running rich with crap power I blow one,
I decided to do a search on runryder to find out the recommended shims that
go between the viper head and the cylinder, the end result told me I was .04
of a shim short having sourced the required shim and trying the tempest out
I found that the engine runs a lot smoother,
Hopefully this will solve my blowing plugs problem.

The Raptor 90 has had some pennies spent on it, It has a new OS91 c-spec ps,
If you don't know about these engine then its basically a c-spec with perry
pump fitted in the back plate, larger bore carb with only two needles
(original c-spec has three) and a blue coloured head,
This engine was easy to set-up and provides constant power through all sorts
of tight spot maneuvers,
The raptor also has a new one-way bearing, anodized bits and bobs a carbon
base plate and carbon pitch seesaw I've also just fitted a push-pull lever
set-up on the elevator servo.
Had a good couple of flights today, the raptor is so good at the moment the
fury has a habit of staying in the car.

By the way Paul (happy hoverer) I drink STELLA

21st December 2003

Things have changed in my fleet of heli's.

My poor thrashed to bits Raptor 50 has been sold, Due to the fact that it flies so untidily compared to my raptor 90,

In its place I decided to sell the misses and use the money to purchase a miniature aircraft fury tempest Fai,

Why Fai I hear you ask!

Well I fancied something that was stable in the hover so that I can practice my slow and accurate flying and then use the raptor 90 to tear around the sky and practice 3D.

The tempest is equipped with:

OS 91 with hyper head and Perry pump,

Hatori sb16,

Futaba gv1,

Futaba 9252x 3

Futaba 9202 on throttle

Futaba gy601 and 9251 working the tail.

I've yet to fly this set up as I'm still waiting for the servo's to arrive, the heli looks great and I cant wait to wring it out.

I've also managed to get my hands on a Fury tempest 3d,

This is equipped with:

OS 91 c-spec with dual plug viper and Perry pump,

Youngblood muscle pipe 2

Futaba gv1,

Futaba 9206x4

Futaba gy601 and 9251 working the tail.

This machine is sex! I purchased it second hand for a small fortune and had to drive over 200 miles to get it.

Haven't had a lot of flying time due to the English weather but I did manage a couple of setup flights on Wednesday the 3rd,

Sunday the 7th I felt confident enough to fit its flying canopy and do a few circuits and loops with it, I thought the Raptor was accurate in flight but this thing is so tight and precise I cant wait for the weekend to arrive,

As to my flying buddies read there sites they've all been up to something!!

UPDATE ENDS

I managed to dig the dirt while inverted on the 12th, this event made Andy b that was trying to take a photo and myself jump,

Can't say I've had a rush like that for a long time.

October the 19th we were invited to a club called positive pitch (thanks again chaps) the day was cold and very windy,

I managed one flight, well half a tank before I stuffed it in the ground, no excuses the engine lost power at a crucial moment then I lost tail power and before I knew it there was a big cloud of dust and a broken heli.

The damage wasn't to bad, I replaced all the broken and bent parts, took the engine apart to make sure it was OK and replaced all of the fuel lines

October 26th

Didn't have a very good day, first flight of the 50 both of the tail blades sheared off while inverted, I somehow managed to crash it inverted,

For once I didn't break the blades.

Then it was time to check out the 90 and make sure it was set up after the crash on the 19th, I've now got an engine problem where it will stop for no reason, I'm working on that one!

We also had a new heli flyer arrive at the club, I checked his heli over and left it to Andy b to test fly, after making sure it was OK we let Russell (Bellypopper) have a go with training undercarriage fitted.

Well done Russ that was a great first flight, One day you will understand the feeling we get helping a newbe take his first steps.
