Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.
Out of the seven deadly sins, gluttony has to be the most self-destructive
in the modern society. In the past decade or two, the standard human size has
been getting larger and larger. People are desperately looking for a miracle
cure for obesity. Unfortunately, some overweight people have many a theory that
leads them to nowhere.
There are millions of global products claiming to be effective but they usually
end in disappointment. People try every diet in the world and most of them fail
miserably. Some of them comfort themselves by accepting the status quo,
criticizing "size zero women" as if it were their problem. On television, a 45 stone woman
insists that she is sexy and beautiful and that it is other people that are
having problems; the parents of a 13 stone nine year old girl insist that their
daughter do eat a very healthy daily diet. Some blame their genes, their glands,
their metabolism and probably their cat. The unfortunate genetic disorder that
causes uncontrollable growth is extremely rare and is obviously not self-inflicted.
Burying one's head in the sand is not beneficial for the well-being.
Most people already know the serious problems of being overweight so there's
no need to be reiterated. If you are to deal with a top sin successfully, you
have to gain a different perspective. Instead of searching for a miracle diet,
you work out the clandestine psychological issues.
The people who are overweight usually have the following common problems:
- they believe
that they are born big to avoid the guilt of not dealing with the problem
effectively
- they starve
for a day and delude themselves that slim people are eating more than them
- after not having
food for a while they binge on more junk food
- they do unsustainable
strenuous exercises excessively for a while
It cannot be emphasised enough that, you must eat a healthy breakfast of a
normal portion everyday so you don't feel starved. Many an overweight person
subconsciously and mistakenly believes that there are only two extreme states:
you either have to binge or starve. Many therefore go straight from gluttony
to starvation which has been proven a bad move time and time again. In reality,
in order to succeed, we have to understand there are different stages along
the spectrum and that ideally one should aim to balance the scale most of the
time.

Change a Losing Game
Have a healthy and enjoyable early dinner. Do not starve yourself, not even
just for one day, as you will only crave for more food next time you binge.
Do not eat late in the evening. Avoid alcohol, except a moderate amount of red
wine. It is possible to train yourself not to over consume potato chips. If
you don't leave chocolate, crisps, cakes or fizzy drinks around the house then
you can't have them when you are not supposed to.
It is essential to understand that food manufacturers put in ingredients (e.g.
excessive sugar and salt) that aim to get the consumers addicted to their products.
It is extremely hard to resist if you leave these products in the house. Discipline
yourself and you can outsmart them. Humans are creatures of habits, you will
soon get used to the new regime.
If you eat normal portions of healthy diets, your stomach will shrink back
to a normal size and you won't feel hungry as before. Unfortunately the more
you eat, the more you need to eat due to the gradual stretch of your stomach
over time.
Regular exercising like walking and yoga is much more beneficial and effective
than sporadic strenuous exercising.

In his book called Always
Change a Losing Game, Dr Posen says "... self-care should be the most
logical thing in the world. Choosing a healthy lifestyle has many inherent benefits,
like improving your energy and reducing your stress. But there are also symbolic
benefits, especially as a metaphor for taking control of your life. Usually lifestyle
problems consist of overload or self-neglect -- trying to do too much or not doing
nearly enough. The goal is to make choices that feature balance and moderation.
... Decide what you really need for a good quality of life. Then slow down
enough to enjoy it. ... The guiding motto should be: Train, don't strain."
I can almost hear you say, it's easier said than done. In fact, it is easier
than you think if you recognise and understand the problem of being overweight
is not because you have not found the perfect diet. It's not about will power
either. You need an effective strategy. All you need to do to start your journey
to success is design your own unique way to break
your addiction and stop being a victim of the food manufacturers who set

Set yourself an
achievable target: e.g. Lose one pound in weight a day! Remember to also set
a minimum threshold value to avoid anorexia, otherwise there will be nothing
left of you within a year !
You will achieve your target weight if the motivation is there to break the
pattern. If you firmly believe that you can do it, hypnotherapy surely helps.
Find a reputable and recommended hypnotherapist if you can afford it. If not,
explore self-hypnosis or join a weekly class and meet other people who share
a positive attitude. Don't forget to reward yourself with little enjoyable affordable
non-food treats whenever you have done well.
