The Super Centenarian and the lawyer - Real Life story

A few decades ago, a lawyer called Raffray made a deal with Jeanne when she was 90 yrs old: he would pay her 2,500 francs every month until she died and then her apartment would become his (similar to Equity Release - Reverse Mortgage).

Raffray thought he couldn't possibly lose since she was so old.

Guess what?! Jeanne outlived Raffray! Raffray died at 77, after paying Jeanne more than $180,000, better than double the apartment's market value. His family was still paying when she died.

Jeanne Louise Calment (February 21, 1875 – August 4, 1997) reached the longest confirmed lifespan in history at 122 years and 164 days. Her lifespan has been thoroughly documented by scientific study. She outlived her husband by 55 years, their only child by 63 years and their only grandchild by 37 years..

Age is like a bank account

Mr. Jones, a well-poised 92 year old elderly gentleman, is moving into a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years has recently passed away, making the move necessary. Even though partially blind, he manages to shave and get dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably coiffured.

After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, his room is finally ready. He smiles sweetly when I give him a visual description of the tiny room, including minute details like the eyelet sheets on his window.

"I love it!" He says with the enthusiasm of an eight year old having just been presented with a new puppy.

"Mr. Jones, you haven't even seen the room yet!"

"That doesn't matter," he replied. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged. It's how I arrange my mind. I have already decided to love it.

It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice: I can either spend the day in bed recounting the difficulties I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or I can get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away. Old age is like a bank account, you withdraw from what you've put in. Thank you for your part in filling my memory bank which I am still depositing."

Apart from depositing a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories, remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

A lecture from a successful businessman

One day, a wealthy businessman hired a fishing boat to take him out to sea for a day of relaxation. The sun was shining, and the wealthy man took a liking to the happy young fisherman who guided the fishing boat through the waters of the harbour.

"Young man," said the wealthy businessman. "I can teach you the secrets of success, if you'll only listen carefully."

"Ok," said the young fisherman, smiling as he cleaned the morning's catch.

Although he was a bit taken aback by the young man's casual manner, the businessman began his lecture. "First off, double your prices. You run a good, clean boat and you know where the fish are plentiful."

"Why would I want to do that?" replied the young man, distracted by watching a small crab playing in the waves by the shore. The fisherman could feel the irritation rising as he replied. "Because then you will be able to buy a second boat, and a third, and you will be able to take on more tourists and catch more fish. If you work hard, you will earn enough to buy a whole fleet of boats."

"But why would I want to do that?" the young fisherman asked as he rolled over onto his back to soak up the last gentle rays of the afternoon sun. By now, the businessman was furious. "Because then you will become rich, and you can hire people to do your work for you while you spend your days fishing and relaxing in the sun!"

"Ah," the young fisherman said, nodding sagely. "That sounds wonderful!"

Frog of Wisdom (Fables, Aesop, Late 6th Century BC)

Two frogs dwelled in the same pool. The pool being dried up under the summer's heat, they left it and set out together to seek another home. As they went along they chanced to pass a deep well, amply supplied with water, on seeing which one of the frogs said to the other, "Let us descend and make our abode in this well, it will furnish us with shelter and food."

The other replied with greater caution, "But suppose the water should fail us, how can we get out again from so great a depth?"

Do nothing without a regard to the consequences. Avoid making the mistake of getting out of a small problem only to step into a larger one.

Foul Play (Local News)

Juliet was a borough councillor in a small town near Birmingham in England. As a good citizen, she regularly collected litter while out walking and used a plastic carrier bag to take it home, along with any mess from her 5 month old German Shepherd. On Tuesday evening (15 Feb 2005), she was walking her pet along a foot path as usual. Her bag was full so she was ready to go home.

From out of nowhere, a robber wearing a dark hooded top ran after her. He forcibly snatched her bag before disappearing again leaving her in shock ...

Grand Prix

Modena, Italy: The Ferrari F1 Team fired their entire pit crew yesterday. The announcement was followed by Ferrari's decision to take advantage of the English Government's "Work For the Dole" Scheme and hire unemployed youths from Liverpool.

The decision to hire them was brought on by a recent documentary on how unemployed youths in Liverpool were able to remove a set of car wheels in less than 6 seconds without proper equipment, whereas Ferrari's existing crew can only do it in 8 seconds. This was thought to be an excellent yet bold move by Ferrari management, as most races are won and lost in the pits. Ferrari would have an advantage over every team.

However, Ferrari expectations were easily exceeded. As during the crew's first practice session, not only were "da boyz from Bootle" able to change the tyres in under 6 seconds but within 12 seconds they had resprayed, rebadged, and had sold the vehicle over to the McLaren Team for four dozen Stella's and a gram of Charlie.

The Donkey

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway. It just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They each grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realised what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer looked down the well, and was astonished at what he saw. As every shovel of dirt hit his back, the donkey would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off.

The Moral: Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

The cards Morgan deals - Anecdote 1985 (US)

J. P. Morgan Sr once told a jeweler of his acquaintance that he was interested in buying a pearl scarf-pin. Just a few weeks later, the jeweler happened upon a magnificient pearl. He had it mounted in an appropriate setting and sent it to Morgan, together with a bill for $5,000.

The following day the package was returned. Morgan's accompanying note read: "I like the pin, but I don't like the price. If you will accept the enclosed check for $4,000, please send back the box with the seal unbroken."

The enraged jeweler refused the check and dismissed the messenger in disgust. He opened up the box to reclaim the unwanted pin, only to find that it had been removed. In its place was a check for $5,000.

The stallion might fly - The craft of power 1979

The sultan [of Persia] had sentenced two men to death. One of them, knowing how much the sultan loved his stallion, offered to teach the horse to fly within a year in return for his life. The sultan, fancying himself as the rider of the only flying horse in the world, agreed.

The other prisoner looked at his friend in disbelief. "You know horses don't fly. What made you come up with a crazy idea like that? You're only postponing the inevitable."

"Not so," said the [first prisoner]. "I have actually given myself four chances for freedom. First, the sultan might die during the year. Second, I might die. Third, the horse might die. And fourth ... I might teach the horse to fly!"

The clever employee - puzzle

Once upon a time, a miser hired a worker for a seven months' contract. They agreed on the term that the worker should be paid a silver ring at the end of each month as his wages. The miser was very pleased with himself as he thought he had designed a way to avoid paying the worker without breaking the law.

At the end of the first month, the worker came to claim his earning. The miser presented him with a big chain made up of seven silver rings interlocking one after another. He said, "I have already prepared your wages for the 7 months. You are to receive one silver ring each month as stipulated. To be fair, there is just one rule with this contract, you can only break ONE silver ring during this 7 months' period, as simple as that. If you break this rule, not only are you not going to get paid for your work, you will have to return whatever I've paid you in the past."

The worker thought for a while and agreed. He broke one of the seven rings and take the broken ring home. Then, he came back to claim his wages every month until at the end of the seventh month he had all seven rings without breaking the miser's rule. He just broke one of the rings in the first month. How did he do it?   [ANSWER]

An Out-Of-Body Experience - case referenced by Gill Edwards

A man was involved in a serious car accident on a Swiss mountain pass. He said that he left his body and found himself floating above the road.

The accident was holding up traffic heading for a major football event, and he could hear people cursing and swearing at the delay. Then he heard a woman praying for the victim of the road accident - praying for him. She was praying so fervently, almost frantically, that he decided he would return to his body, with the intention of being able to thank her one day. He moved towards the voice and somehow memorised, in his out-of-body state, the registration of her car. Three doctors had already pronounced him dead, but miraculously he survived.

Several months later, he was able to tell a doctor he trusted about this out-of-body experience, and begged him to find the woman who had prayed. She was traced - and broke down in tears at this confirmation that her prayers had been heard.

An interview with God - Author Unknown

"Come in," God said. "So, you would like to interview Me?"

"If you have the time," I said. God smiled and said: "My time is eternity and is enough to do everything. What questions do you have in mind to ask me?"

"What surprises you most about mankind?"

God answered, "That they get bored of being children, are in a rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health.

That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live neither for the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and they die as if they had never lived..."

God's hands took mine and we were silent for a while and then I asked...

"As a parent, what are some of life's lessons you want your children to learn?"

God replied with a smile: "To learn that they cannot make anyone love them.

What they can do is to let themselves be loved.

To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but who they have in their lives.

To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. All will be judged individually on their own merits, not as a group on a comparison basis!

To learn that a rich person is not the one who has the most, but is one who needs the least.

To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in persons we love, and that it takes many years to heal them.

To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness.

To learn that there are persons that love them dearly, but simply do not know how to express or show their feelings.

To learn that money can buy everything but happiness.

To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it totally different.

To learn that a true friend is someone who knows everything about them...and likes them anyway.

To learn that it is not always enough that they be forgiven by others, but that they have to forgive themselves."

I sat there for a while enjoying the moment. I thanked Him for his time and for all that He has done for me and my family, and He replied, "Any time. I'm here 24 hours a day. All you have to do is ask for me, and I'll answer."

"People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

Lateral Thinking - by Edward De Bono

Many years ago when a person who owed money could be thrown into jail, a merchant in London had the misfortune to owe a huge sum to a money- lender. The money-lender, who was old and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful teenage daughter. He proposed a bargain. He said he would cancel the merchant's debt if he could have the girl instead.

Both the merchant and his daughter were horrified at the proposal. So the money-lender proposed that they let Providence decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money-bag and then the girl would have to pick out one of the pebbles. If she chose the black pebble she would become his wife and her father's debt would be cancelled. If she chose the white pebble she would stay with her father and the debt would still be cancelled. But if she refused to pick out a pebble her father would be thrown into jail and she would starve.

Reluctantly the merchant agreed. They were standing on a pebble-strewn path in the merchant's garden as they talked and the money-lender stooped down to pick up the two pebbles. As he picked up the pebbles the girl, sharp-eyed with fright, noticed that he picked up two black pebbles and put them into the moneybag. He then asked the girl to pick out the pebble that was to decide her fate and that of her father.

Imagine that you are standing on that path in the merchant's garden. What would you have done if you had been the unfortunate girl? If you had had to advise her what would you have advised her to do?

What type of thinking would you use to solve the problem? You may believe that careful logical analysis must solve the problem if there is a solution. This type of thinking is straight forward vertical thinking. The other type of thinking is lateral thinking. Vertical thinkers are not usually of much help to a girl in this situation. The way they analyse it, there are three possibilities:

1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble. 2. The girl should show that there are two black pebbles in the bag and expose the money-lender as a cheat. 3. The girl should take a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her father from prison.

None of the suggestions is very helpful, for if the girl does not take a pebble her father goes to prison, and if she does take a pebble, then she has to marry the money-lender

The story shows the difference between vertical thinking and lateral thinking. Vertical thinkers are concerned with the fact that the girl has to take a pebble. Lateral thinkers become concerned with the pebble that is left behind. Vertical thinkers take the most reasonable view of a situation and then proceed logically and carefully to work it out. Lateral thinkers tend to explore all the different ways of looking at something, rather than accepting the most promising and proceeding from that.

The girl in the pebble story put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it she fumbled and let it fall to the path where it was immediately lost among all the others.

"Oh, how clumsy of me," she said, "but never mind - if you look into the bag you will be able to tell which pebble I took by the colour of the one that is left.'"

Since the remaining pebble is of course black, it must be assumed that she has taken the white pebble, since the money-lender dare not admit his dishonesty. In this way, by using lateral thinking, the girl changes what seems an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one. The girl is actually better off than if the money-lender had been honest and had put one black and one white pebble into the bag, for then she would have had only an even chance of being saved. As it is, she is sure of remaining with her father and at the same time having his debt cancelled. (Extract from The Use of Lateral Thinking pages 9-11).

A Glass Of Milk - Author Unknown

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left. He was hungry and decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"

"You don't owe me anything," she replied, "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for kindness."

He said, "Then I thank you from my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Years later, that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, he went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown, he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for his approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all.

Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words: "PAID IN FULL WITH ONE GLASS OF MILK. (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly." Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: "Thank You, God, that Your love is shed abroad through human hearts and hands."

That Goat - Original Author Unknown

Once upon a time, there was a man who was terribly unhappy. Someone suggested that he should see this wise man outside the village for advice. So off he went.

The wise man asked him what his problem was. He made a long list and rambled on about his job being too unpleasant; his house too small; his wife not pretty enough etc. When he finished, the wise man asked him to buy a goat and take it home. He didn't understand why but did it anyway.

A week later, he went to see the wise man again and told him it didn't work. The goat was making his life hell and how it made a mess in the house and in the garden. He had to spend day and night taking care of it. The wise man just sent him away and asked him to come back to see him in a month or so.

A month later, the man returned looking exhausted. He said he couldn't take it anymore, it'd gotten from bad to worse. He said, "The goat is destroying my life." The wise man then told him, "Now go and sell the goat and return to me in a week".

A week later, the man returned neat, fresh and smiling. "How are things?" inquired the wise man.

"Wonderful", he replied, "my house is clean and tidy. My wife and my children are now very happy and so am I. Thank you so much for your help!!"

Vester Manor 1906- Original Author Unknown

About ten years ago, my father's friend was near Boston visiting friends in late October. He took his daughter out trick-or-treating. About half an hour into it, they went up to a big house. The sign above the door read "Vester Manor - 1906". There was no-one else around this house, which although he found to be odd he took no notice of. They knocked on the door but no-one answered. They were about to go to the next house when he heard an eerie voice call out. He thought it was saying "around the back .... come to the back".

He told his daughter to wait on the front porch while he checked out what was talking. There was nothing around the back, so he went back to find his daughter but she was not there. He called out her name but no-one answered. Then he saw it. With horror stretched across his face as he read the words "She's Home Now" written in what looked to be fresh blood.

He rapped on the door but it was locked shut. He called out but no-one heard. He rushed home, trying to figure out what to tell his wife when he got home. He bust in the door, and to his surprise, there was his daughter and his wife sitting on the couch watching TV. He asked his daughter what happened. She looked confused. She said, "But Daddy, I never went trick-or-treating with you. You left about half an hour ago by yourself!"

He was trying to figure out what was going on when he noticed the newspaper sitting on the mantle. The article on the cover read "This Halloween is the 50th anniversary of the disappearance of 10 year old Rita Vesta, who lived in the old Vester Manor." Then he saw the picture .... It looked just like his own daughter. (Source: www.sendingfun.com)

Friend or Foe - Original Author Unknown

A little bird is flying around looking for food on a cold winter day. There is barely anything to eat. After a long while the exhausted creature collapses on the cold damp grass. It is about to freeze to death.

A cow happens to be nearby and does not even notice the bird's predicament. The larger creature goes about doing its everyday business. All of a sudden, the feeble body is covered with the cow's dung. The bird is furious with the cow, but the repugnant substance has practically saved its life by keeping it warm. It's not so bad after all. The bird even starts singing.

A cat walks past and hears the lovely voice. It carefully picks up the soiled bird and cleans it. The bird is delighted. In a moment or two, something is about to happen. To the bird's horror, the anatomy of the cat's mouth is at its face. Gulp !! The poor thing has just become the cat's latest dinner.

However, the soul of the little bird lives on to let us know the moral of the story: Sometimes in life, the person who does things you don't like is not necessarily your enemy; and the person who seems to be nice to you is not necessarily your friend. And also, don't be too boastful when doing well or you might find yourself attracting unfavourable attention.

The woman was distressed and didn't feel that she should share it with the greedy man. She refused to pay up. Her ex-husband took her to court and demanded that she should cough up half of her money.

If Every Day was Halloween - by Rebecca Robbins

It was Halloween and my bag was almost full with candy. I had brought my dog with me trick'r'treating. Just as we reached the part of town where I can't go, my dog's bone blew away! I ran after my dog. Then I saw a bat. I did not have time to look at it. Finally I saw my dog. Then I looked around. I was lost. Then I looked up and I saw the bat! The bat flew down. Then it said "Make three wishes."

"Why?" I asked?

"Because you found my special rock," said the bat.

"Well, I said, "I want my dog's bone back." There lying on the street was the bone. "I want everyday to be Halloween," I said.

"O.K," said the bat.

"I'm lost. Will you help me get home?"

"Sure," said the bat, "follow me." When I went to bed I was happy because it was Halloween everyday. When I woke up, I went outside and the beach was swarming with bats. Candy wrappers were on the sidewalk. The stores were getting more and more Halloween candy. Then, one night Katelyn and I were playing outside and the ball disappeared. We went inside and Katelyn said, "I wonder what happened?" Then I told her the whole story. I had an idea. I still had one more wish. "I want it to be Halloween only once a year." But nothing happened. So we ran to find a bat, but all we saw was a nest of baby bats. We asked, "Where is your mom?" "Getting food for us," said the smallest bat. All of a sudden, the bats swooped down.

"My wish didn't work."

"Your third wish will not work without saying the magic poem."

"How does it go?" I asked.

"April, June, Spring and Summer there is only one holiday that is not a bummer. It's Halloween."

"Thanks," we said running off. When we got back I said the chant. Then something felt different. It was November 6, 1999. I knew it would be Halloween only once a year.

What a kid!

In his book A Deep Breath of Life, author and teacher Alan Cohen refers to an experiment some psychologists did on children's attitudes. They filled a room with new toys and then placed a child who was considered negative and ungrateful in the room. He went from one toy to the next very quickly, playing with each for a few moments, then turned to the researcher and complained that he was bored and needed something else to do.

Now it was time for the experiment with the second child. He had been described as very positive and optimistic about everything. So the scientists placed him in a room with a big pile of manure. As they watched for his reaction, they were amazed to see a big smile appear on his face.

"Why are you so happy?" the researcher asked the boy.

"Because there must be a pony somewhere!" he responded happily.

Once upon a time, there was a very bad tempered child. One day, his father gave him a bag of nails and said, "Son, every time you are angry, nail one of these on the garden fence."

On the first day, the boy hammered 37 nails on the fence. That was very tiring. However, as the days passed by, he found himself having to add less and less nails everyday. He seemed to be able to calm his anger going through the ritual. He discovered that it was much less work to control his temper than to hammer those nails on the fence. Until one day, he didn't need to add any more nails. He was very pleased and went to tell his father.

His father said, "From now on, for every day that you haven't lost your temper, you are to take down one nail." As time went by, the nails came out one by one until one day there were no more nails on the fence. The father brought his son to the garden fence and said, "Well done son. I'm very proud of you." He then pointed at the holes left by the nails and said, "Let these holes remind you that, in future, it's better not to hurt your loved ones in the first place." The son could not have agreed more.
