Wisdom comes with age but sometimes age comes alone. Wizdom Collection

"With wisdom, there is no delusion. With benevolence, there is no worry. With courage, there is no fear" - Confucius (551-479BC)

Here is a selection of wise words coming from some great philosophers. If you are interested in self-development techniques, click on the Books link to get a list of recommendations. In the meantime, pick out the ones from the following list that are appropriate to your current situation. Write them out and take them in. Enjoy !!

    • When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.
    • Conflict adds no value.
    • An eye for an eye and the whole world will go blind.
    • Blind faith in bad leadership is not patriotism.
    • Unfounded paranoia is a reflection of the subject's inner self.
    • Accept human differences and limitations. Don't expect anyone to be perfect.
    • Your beliefs determine your quality of life.
    • The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
    • Love is one of the most powerful energies of the Universe. It's thousands of times stronger than anger, resentment or fear.
    • True freedom is learning to let go of things that you feel you must have.
    • Destructive emotions such as jealousy and anger don't hurt others. They hurt you. Give them up, let them go.
    • Forgiveness is necessary for inner peace.
    • Practise forgiveness. It is the key to feeling good about how others are treating you. Then release any anger you may be feeling, simply let it go and focus on other things. Remember, to bear ill-feelings towards someone else is more damaging to the bearer.
    • Never tell your best friend anything that you wouldn't want your worst enemy to know.
    • The more attention you pay an enemy, the stronger you make him.
    • There is no revenge like oblivion, for it is the entombment of the unworthy in the dust of their own nothingness.
    • Speaking of your anger, yelling and screaming, only puts you in a power struggle with another person and closes both your hearts.
    • Speak positive words. Look for the best in people and situations.
    • Happiness depends on a clear mind. Like the still reflecting lake, a lake on which there is no ripple of hatred.
    • You do not need to get angry or demand your rights, for that only creates a power struggle between you and others.
    • In dealing with angry people, facts alone don't work. You have to listen; empathise; give respect; then give facts.
    • The more you focus on problems between you, or on what is wrong with other people, the more you will find relationships going downhill. When people first met, they focused on the good in one another.
    • Stop craving and your suffering will cease.
    • Disarray adds to the tension of life. Clearing out the clutter is an orderly way to calm.
    • Contentment is a calm, deep and more lasting form of happiness.
    • Happiness and calm go together.
    • Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.
    • Don't look back - except to celebrate the past or learn from it.
    • Worry is the interest on the payment not yet due.
    • Pettiness keeps you trapped in a small world.
    • Don't drag in past events that have been settled or shelved long ago.
    • One of the greatest strain in life is constantly having to live up to the standards we set for ourselves. From time to time, relax those standards a little.
    • If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter. For always, there will be greater or lesser persons than yourself.
    • Stop explaining your life. There's no need to justify every action when it's none of other people's business.
    • How you think determines how you act. How you act in turn determines how others react to you. You teach how the world treat you.
    • Don't depend your happiness on the thoughts, feelings, words and actions of others.
    • Don't permit any person or situation to totally determine your well-being.
    • Control only what you can control.
    • A wise man is the master of his mind whereas a fool is its slave. Practise self-control.
    • A sound body is able to more effectively house a sound mind.
    • Be conscious of your choices and you will feel free.
    • Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
    • Think before you buy.
    • Sea air, salt water and the sound of waves contribute to a growing sense of calm.
    • Most worries are future based. They revolve around things that, in most cases, will never happen. Concentrate on the present and the future will take care of itself.
    • There is seldom any rational reason for having regrets about past deeds or events. Because the past does not exist in any way other than in your memory.
    • Those who get the most from life are those who look for the wonder in even the smallest things they do.
    • Satisfying cravings of any kind is no way to help yourself feel calm. Recognise addictions for what they are and find an alternative.
    • Self-confidence is a matter of practice.
    • Do everything with care, even the chores. Take pleasure in your actions ... even those you might have wished to avoid.
    • Follow Nature. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it shines. Be happy with one, be happy with the other.
    • When you feel defeated, think. Defeat is only a state of mind, nothing more.
    • What goes around comes around. If you are positive and give out positive energy you will remain positive. What you give you get.
    • Walk and talk like a winner. Be confident.
    • Get control of your voice. It's a powerful tool. Voice is the most valuable resource for assertive communication.
    • Anything you set your mind to work on will become a reality. Learn to visualise the outcome of your goals.
    • A man is what he thinks about all day long.
    • Practise self-observation. Notice past mistakes and avoid repeating them in future.
    • Everyday the happy person does at least one difficult thing.
    • You can steal my money, but not my time. Money I can replace, but time I never can.
    • The poor spend their money and then save what's left over whereas the rich save their money and then spend what's left over.
    • A rose that blooms in adversity, is the most rare and beautiful of all.
    • When you get low in spirit and discouraged, remember this: the lowest ebb is the turn of the tide.
    • When it is dark enough, men see the stars.
    • Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.
    • Great Minds have purposes, others have wishes. Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune; but great minds rise above them.
    • Society is good for the spirit. Solitude is good for the soul.
    • An old man has known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.
    • Griefing is part of the healing process. It is not a destination to wallow in.
    • Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
    • The best things in life aren't things, they are people like you and me.
    • Ageing is a cultural trap that programs men to abuse, misuse, and disuse their bodies.
    • If there was something unpleasant in the past, stop thinking about it and stop talking about it! The energy you put into it keeps it alive.
    • Many people have plenty of money but a lot of them are nothing but rich.
    • Heaven is under our feet as well as over our head.
    • There's an illusion that external events have the power to hurt you, that other people have the power to hurt you. They don't. It's you who give them this power!
    • Manners maketh man as do fine clothes.
    • Life is filled with detours, the secret is to enjoy the scenery.
    • Use the stones that life throws at you to lay the foundations for your future.

    Sir Winston Churchill says:

    • The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.
    • To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day.
    • A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.
    • I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.
    • When I am abroad, I always make it a rule never to criticise or attack the government of my own country. I make up for lost time when I come home.
    • The empires of the future are the empires of the mind. [ Speech at Harvard University, September 6, 1943 ]
    • We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.
    • It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time.
    • It helps to write down half a dozen things which are worrying me. Two of them, say, disappear; about two, nothing can be done, so it's no use worrying, and two perhaps can be settled.

Business Wisdom:

    • Whatever you sell, sell its features, not its benefits.
    • Don't try to sell something that is already sold.
    • Don't wish it was easier. Just wish you were tougher.
    • Turn bad experiences into opportunities.
    • When asking for help, appeal to people's interest, never to their mercy or gratitude.
    • Once we make a decision to do something, the means appear.
    • Deal with big difficulties one bit at a time.
    • Knowing what to do is not enough. You must do what you know.
    • The secret of being happy is not doing what one likes, but liking what one does.
    • Work to live. Don't live to work.
    • Repetition is the mother of success.
    • Say what you mean and mean what you say.
    • Setbacks are part of being alive. Problems are opportunities in disguise.
    • It's not how many brains you've got that matters, it's how you use your brains that counts.
    • Never underestimate your own intelligence and never over-estimate the intelligence of others.

    Zen:

    • Never test the depth of the water with both feet.
    • It is not the result of our actions that we are working for, but the fulfillment of just doing.
    • Let everything go where it naturally wants to go and you will always be successful.
    • In nature you already own the stars, the moon and the mountains.
    • When everything is working naturally, the heart spontaneously responds with the appropriate action.
    • Enlightenment is like the reflection of the moon in water. The moon does not get wet. The water is not separated.
    • All rivers run to the ocean without filling it up. All water comes from it without ever emptying it.
    • Be empty, be still. Watch everything. Just come and go.
    • Silently sitting by the window. Leaves fall and flowers bloom. The seasons come and go. Could there be a better life?
    • An orchid doesn't lose its fragrance just because no one notices how good it smells.

    Love and Friendship:

    • Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget.
    • The hardest thing to do is watch the one you love, love somebody else.
    • Love starts with a smile, grows with a kiss, and ends with a tear.
    • Don't cry over anyone who won't cry over you.
    • Don't let the past hold you back. You're missing the good stuff.
    • Life's short. If you don't look around once in a while, you might miss it.
    • A best friend is like a four leaf clover - HARD TO FIND and LUCKY TO HAVE.
    • Some people make the world SPECIAL - just by being in it.
    • Best friends are the siblings God forgot to give us.
    • Good friends are like stars ... you don't always see them but you know they are always there.
    • What do you do when the only person who can make you stop crying is the person who made you cry?
    • Nobody is perfect, until you fall in love with them.
    • Most people walk in and out of your life... but only friends leave footprints on your heart.
