Established in 1982 by the late David B Weir, whose passion for the breed was rooted in his fond childhood memories of the working heavy draught horses stationed at the Clyde Valley timber yard his father managed.

Throughout his working life David retained a burning ambition to own, breed and exhibit Clydesdales of the highest calibre. Purchase of Hillhouse farm, in an area steeped in clydesdale horse-lore enabled David to fulfill his long nurtured dream.

Foundation stock acquired in 1982 included two extra well bred mares that were to be the corner-stones of the new stud - Backshiels Lucinda and Barloch Ashleaf.  Out of the former came Hillhouse Thistle, dam of David's 1994 Cawdor Cup winner, Hillhouse Vanguard and full brother Hillhouse General Elect. The latter was Lanark foal show Champion in 1992 and Male Champion at the Royal Highland and Aberdeen shows in 1994. Hillhouse Vanguard

Hillhouse Belle, a home-bred daughter of Barloch Ashleaf, gave David the Supreme Championship in 1987 at Aberdeen, Britain's largest Clydesdale Horse show (at the time). Her first foal, Hillhouse Major, was crowned Male Champion at the 1992 Royal Highland show.

Jim & Linzi ( David's daughter ) share David's great enthusiasm for Clydesdales and are determined to maintain and build upon the exceptionally high standards and show yard success that came to be synonymous with the Hillhouse Stud.
