The roots bed: seeds of three types of carrot and two types of beetroot |
One of the seed beds: leeks, spinach, and other stuff, somewhat ruffled by cats using it as a toilet. The other seed bed has lots of salad stuff. |
The Three Sisters bed: sweetcorn, two types of dwarf bean, and several types of squash. |

At the beginning of the month, we planted some of the seedlings out, plus loads of seeds. After a few days of very hot sunshine, the weather changed back to normal English spring, i.e. cool, windy, overcast and continual rain. It saved time on the watering, but made the gardening less fun. However, it did mean that the house got cleaned for the first time in ages. |
The brassicas bed: cauliflowers under the net; seeds of cabbage and kohl rabi. |

Cath’s tip of the month: leave the new topsoil for a few days, then dig out all the annual weeds, before planting seeds. It would have saved a lot of weeding plus, as a novice, I had difficulty distinguishing veg seeds from weed seeds. |
Somewhere among the weeds there should be carrot seedlings. |
This has also been the month of the growbag fiasco—why has everything planted in growbags died or developed nasty diseases? Cath’s second tip of the month: don’t use growbags, and/or don’t be tempted to plant things out too early. |
After long hours of back-aching weeding there are neat rows. Wire netting might persuade the cats to find somewhere else for their toilet. |
The cucumbers withered and died. |

The tomatoes didn’t look well either. According to the Vegetable Expert book, this might be mosaic virus, so the plants are for the funeral pyre. |

Plants left in the greenhouse continued to grow happily. |
