Prologue—2006
Once upon a time, two fat middle-aged women had a mid-life crisis. So we gave up our safe, well-paid jobs, sold our houses, and bought a house together in the country. We moved to Hillyground Cottage in December 2006. We spent the first months finishing and furnishing our two self-catering holiday cottages, and then got stuck into the gardening, en route to our aim of being vegetatively and fruitily self-sufficient. We were going to write a book about our experiences, as starting a new life in the country is currently in vogue, but couldn’t be bothered, so kept a picture diary instead for our first year.
