There is a brochure to celebrate "100 years of Darfield Wesley" in the present building in Barnsley Road. However, it seems as though the first record of Methodism in Darfield dates back to 1788 as evidenced by a Protestant Dissenting Certificate in the following form --

"We whose names are hereunto subscribed being His Majesties Protestant dissenting subjects intend to make use of the House of Robert Foster in the Town of Darfield in the Diocese and County of York, as a place of Publick Worship of Almighty God, and desire the same may be registered, as Witness our hands this eighth day of July, one thousand seven Hundred and eighty eight.

    Reg./d 9th July 1788.

        Alex'r Mathe

        James Bogie

        Henry Longden

        Paul Brayshay

        Wm. Wilburn

        Kath'e Green "

The original of this certificate is now held in the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research of York University.
