Archibald Frederick Meggs 1921 - 2007
I am sorry to inform you that Archie Meggs died on February 26th this year.
Archie was a stoker on Manxman, and
was on duty when the ship was torpedoed on the 1st Dec 1942. During his service on
Manxman he was
a lightweight boxer. He also became involved
in the ship's Concert Party. Archie left the Navy in 1946 after 6 years service.
The film "Sailor of the king/Single Handed" is to be released on DVD in Canada. The release date is 24th Apr 2007. The DVD can be pre ordered from Amazon.ca at CDN$ 11.98 plus postage. Click HERE to visit their site for details. I have ordered my copy. NOTE: It may require a region free DVD player to play the DVD in the UK.
It's
all still here but for how much longer?

As I understand it the Tyne side shipyard cranes of Swan Hunter have been sold.

* OPERATION MINCEMEAT AUG 1941:
Rear Admiral Robert Kirk Dickson D.S.O., Captain of HMS Manxman 1941- 42, tells of Manxman’s exploits in "Ship in Disguise" from the "Now it can be Told" series of radio broadcasts made during his time as Chief of Naval Information 1944 - 1946.
This is real "Boy's own stuff !!". ( Life on board section, Operation Mincemeat )
From Colin Pomeroy.
I thought that you might like to know that the book which he has edited as a result of the Battle for Malta Veterans Reunion last year has now been published. Running to 366 pages, it has some 100 veterans' stories and over 400 photographs, with about half the book dedicated to RN personnel. Most of the stories will never have been told before outside the family circle and very, very few of the pictures have ever been published. (The picture you kindly let me have of HMS Manxman alongside a jetty taking on stores is included with the story of Ron Checketts.) The book costs just £9.95, plus £2.65 (UK) P&P and can be obtained from me at Pallington Lakes, Pallington, Dorchester, Dorset, DT2 8QU. I'm sure that many of those who served on the fast minelayers in Malta days will find the book fascinating. With very warmest regards, Yours in comradeship, Colin Pomeroy.
I am sorry to inform you that Peter Gurney died on July 1st this year, after a long battle with cancer. Peter served on Manxman 1956 - 1957. He liked to play the drums in the mine alley and was known affectionately to his mates as "The Mad Drummer". Click here for Peters obituary from The Daily Telegraph.
Do you remember these Sailors? If so please email the site. They would like to here from their old ship mates.
