Louis
Armstrong: An Extravagant Life By Laurence
Bergreen
|
Louis Armstrong was a prolific writer himself and constantly made notes of his memories of New Orleans and of the people he met and the bands he played with. The author draws on these previously unexplored archives. He also gives one a good insight into the history of New Orleans with it's different cultures. In my opinion it's the best read todate about the life and times of Louis Armstrong.
The Louis Armstrong Companion: Eight Decades of Commentary
Edited by Joshua Berrett |
A well put together companion from jazz historian Joshua Berrett drawing on The Louis Armstrong Archives. There are Armstrongs autobiographical writings, and letters to friends and family never previously published included in this very informative book. I rate this another good buy for the dedicated Armstrong fans. |

Bix : Man and LegendBy Richard M.Sudhalter |
This is the most informative biography of Bix Beiderbecke I have read to-date. Written by a cornet player ,it gives a detailed account of the ups and downs of a tragic genius who not only competed with the best black jazz musicians of the day, but outshone them in many ways.Sudhalter uses his expertise as a cornet player to explain Bix's unorthodox fingering in musical notation which I found most interesting. On top of this there is the complete discography of everything Bix recorded. I personally recommend this book.
| In Search Of Buddy Bolden
By:- Donald.M.Marquis ![]() |
A really well researched book which explodes some of the myths about Bolden. It exposes Bunk Johnson who said he had played in the Bolden Band but in fact had added ten years to his age so that he would have been old enough . With the aid of civic records and birth and death certificates the author pieces together what the jazz scene was really like at the turn of the century. | Order In Search Of Buddy Bolden Today |

An excellent
book by Eddie Condon of his life as a jazz musician in the 20,s 30,s and
40,s.He tells of his struggles to keep the original New Orleans Jazz alive, and
to earn a living in a time when Jazz for most was only played in the
speakeasies and saloons etc. He was dedicated to bringing jazz into the
respected auspices of the concert hall , a task he succeeded in. |

| Really The Blues by:- Mezz Mezzrow ![]() |
This is a
first class read about clarinetist Mezz Mezzrow. He tells of trials and
tribulations , his struggle with drugs and of his devotion to authentic New
Orleans Jazz and his effort to have fellow musicians play jazz as it should be
played. He tells of his prison sentence for possessing drugs spent in the blacks section of the prison rather than in the whites section. He was so wholly taken up with original New Orleans Jazz that he thought of himself as black . He lived in Harlem for many years and married a black girl. This is a classic |
