February 15th All About Plants. The greenfingered members of the Club will try to help out with any problems.
February 1st Rainbowfishes. Our Guest Speaker is Roger Sleet from Orinoco Aquatics.
The excellent attendance, including Nigel from Reigate & Redhill, made Roger's journey from Hastings all the more worthwhile.
In addition to his highly-informative presentation about more Rainbowfishes than you could shake a stick at, he also brought
along a wide range of aquarium equipment for members to browse through (in addition to pre-orders they had already placed).
Hopefully, the video of the evening will supplement our library of programmes for future consumption, for those whose may
want to view it again.
Don't forget. you can download the huge Rainbowfish book (or just the bits you want) from our frontpage or HERE.
January 18th All about Water. Members are invited to bring along samples of the aquarium water and learn of its characteristics.
Almost an evening of two halves, with those keenly interested in delving into the qualities of their tanks' water and those that
preferred to sit down and chat about other things.
Most people found their water qualities to be 'within specification' from samples that varied from rainwater, through various
local tap waters to marine water. The range of colours of the tested samples looked like a multicoloured rainbow -
every time a discarded test sample was emptied into the slop jug it took on yet another quite different tinge!
January 4th Discus videos. A cobbled together evening that turned out more interesting than thought. The VHS videos by Stan Kemp
of Kingfisheries Croydon of visits to Thailand showed a good selection of varieties available in the late 90s. Picture quality was reasonable
considering having to be 'digitised' and then re-edited.
December 14th CHRISTMAS PARTY. Round off 2011 with a fun evening!
Another fine evening, once members delayed by the
traffic delays had all arrived. The climax of awards
for the 'Best of the Year' were made - Peter Q
taking both the Breeders and the Aquarist of the Year
awards, whilst Barry very deservedly received the
Marjorie and Bert Pratt Memorial Trophy for his outstanding
contributions to the Club (and beyond) during 2011.
The traditional 'Grab a Parcel' game concluded the
Club's year, with a cunningly-disguised Christmas Pudding
having many temporary owners before finding a final resting place.
December 7th 2012 PLANNING EVENING. Bring your ideas on how to fill next year's programme.
With the usual proviso of 'Errors and Omissions Excepted,' a full programme was drawn up for 2012. It was gratifying to
see so much input coming from the newer members and we should have an interesting time in the coming year.
November 23rd AGM & FISH & CHIP SUPPER. In recent years, the emphasis has been to reverse the title with the AGM
merely being a necessary addition to the 'Main Event.' However, protocol had to be observed and after favourable reports
from the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer (we made a profit!), Show and Social Secretaries, the present Committee were
duly re-elected 'en bloc' with the welcome addition of Barry Meades as Trophy Officer.
The question of new members' Welcome Pack' was raised again and Peter Quested suggested that all new members receive
a copy of the Constitution and the year's Programme as a starting point. Also a list of the FBAS Videos will be available
for anyone who wishes to borrow a title. Awareness of the Library was also suggested as an aid for newcomers.
Ashby was presented with
his delayed Marine Furnished
Aquarium Trophy.
A fine selection of self-provided
personal plates, cutlery and
condiments awaited the arrival
of the Fish and Chip Supper
(waitress-served, for some!) following
which, as they say, the meeting ended
with the Raffle and donations of water
treatments from Ron.
November 9th CLOSED SHOW AWARDS EVENING & REVIEW OF THE YEAR. Stand by to be honoured
(or even embarrassed) as we salute the winners and take a look at 2011 Club life.
Once the results had been phoned through from
Chateau Caira (Pete couldn't make it), the winners
duly paraded to collect their well-deserved Awards.
Predictable it was a 'Parade of the Peters' with
Peter Q taking the majority of the Trophies but,
as they say, you have to be in it to win it.
As reported last time, the Furnished Aquarium
Competition resulted in two winners, Vic for his
freshwater tank and Ashby for his marine;
unfortunately, Ashby's Trophy was not to hand
so he will be presented with it at the AGM evening.
The Review of the Year brought back memories of
our active year but sad to say there were hardly any
embarrassing photos -
mostly due to
forgetfulness on the
part of those who might
have grabbed useful shots,
but also to the lateness
of preparation of the
programme. Apologies to all
those who might have been
disappointed not seeing themselves on the screen!
